Sandra Brown’s bestselling romantic thrillers have been topping fiction lists for more than three decades, with a list of 65 titles beginning in the early 1980s. Her formula of bad boys and women in dire straits has proved to be enormously popular. In Sting, Brown’s devious, remote hero is hitman Shaw Kinnard, who has been hired by a ruthless criminal and real bad guy named Panella, on contract to kill beautiful business entrepreneur Jordie Bennett. Panella’s hoping the hit will bring Jordie’s brother, Josh, a fugitive and escaped federal witness, to the surface of whatever scummy pond he’s been hiding in, along with $30 million that Panella figures is his. Josh and Panella were complicit in a scheme to defraud investors of their hard-earned money, and Josh has disappeared along with the loot.

Before reaching the meat of the story, filled with action, disclosures, chases and mayhem, readers get their fill of backstory and ancillary characters, including the numerous cops and FBI agents on Panella’s trail, who also want their prize. Eventually Shaw, who appears to be a cold-hearted kidnapper and killer of helpless women entrepreneurs, decides that the lovely Jordie may be worth more in dollars if she’s alive. He kidnaps her and makes his getaway into the backwoods, and these two strong-willed, stubborn characters must try to outwit the other while evading the law enforcement dragnet.

Thriller readers in general and Brown fans in particular know that this story is just the surface skin, beneath which lie surprises and plot twists that go way beyond the smoldering passion developing between captor and captive—one that we knew would develop from the get-go. The author isn’t showing all her cards, and Shaw and Jordie have plenty of secrets in tow for readers to discover as the book progresses. This part of the story is greatly enhanced by unsavory tidbits about brother Josh, who is a loose cannon if there ever was one.

Sting may be formulaic and lacking in dimension, but readers looking for Brown’s tried-and-true recipe will find plenty to escape into in this smoothly written, late-summer thriller.

New York Times bestselling author Cynthia Eden returns to her romantic suspense series LOST with Torn, which features a whip-smart forensic anthropologist and a hardened special agent. The two have a history together, and their most recent partnership may be more than platonic.

Forensic anthropologist Victoria Palmer is on the verge of cracking the case of a college student who went missing five years ago while on a jog. All she knows is that the girl was most likely murdered and that her killer is still out there. However, as the case takes Victoria closer to the killer, the dangerous individual begins to set his sights on the tenacious and beautiful doctor.

Agent Wade Monroe is a recent transfer to the Last Option Search Team (LOST), but he’s instantly attracted to his new partner, Victoria, a woman with whom he has a complicated history. Wade had to stand by when Victoria was abducted in the past, an unfortunate hazard of their dangerous job. But now that they’re reunited and are working together, Wade wants to do everything in his power to make sure it doesn't happen again—and to ease her job-induced anxiety.

What starts as a no-strings-attached arrangement to quell Victoria’s stress quickly leads to something more, but regardless of Wade and Victoria’s feelings for one another, there’s still a killer on the loose. One who wants to get his hands on Victoria. Wade and Victoria will both have to deal with the skeletons in their closet, as well as their feelings for one another, to close their investigation.

Torn balances the careful progression of two people going from friends to lovers with the eerie intensity of a cat-and-mouse thriller. Since the story begins right in the middle of Victoria’s investigation into the coed’s disappearance, the action starts at top speed and doesn’t stop. Sexy and dark, Torn is a great fit for readers who want complex, intelligent characters paired with a bone-chilling mystery.

When two people on opposite sides of the law are thrown together by unconventional circumstances in New York City’s Diamond District, it's revealed that all that glitters is not gold. Jewel thieves, an FBI agent and a bad girl gone good make Heather Graham’s Flawless a fun romantic suspense complemented by an action-packed heist.

Kieran Finnegan has righted her wrongs, left behind her family’s habit of getting into trouble and acquired a criminal psychology degree. But as much as she’s changed, she finds that she can’t just turn her back on her brothers, especially when one of them has stolen a rather expensive diamond. Kieran does what any sister would do: She plans to “unsteal” the gem and put it back where it belongs.

FBI Agent Craig Frasier is in town investigating a string of jewelry robberies when he finds himself right in the middle of one, along with Kieran. While he’s trying to catch the individuals responsible, Kieran is trying to keep her brother’s name out of it. But when Frasier makes a connection between the robberies and the Finnegan’s family pub, Kieran’s involvement in Craig’s case gets a little more complicated than she planned.

Watching Kieran and Craig work together is really the highlight of Flawless. Though there is plenty of adventure, the romance is more of a slow burn as Kieran and Craig learn about one another, but when tensions run high as danger increases, the two find that they might be destined for more than just a working relationship. The cat-and-mouse game isn’t reserved for catching bad guys!

With plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing, the mystery at the heart of Flawless is sure to remind readers of Pink Panther-esque capers and whodunnits. As Craig grows closer to identifying the suspects stealing diamonds, Kieran worries that when her relation to the Finnegan family is revealed, he will see it as the ultimate betrayal. With a cast of memorable coworkers and family members, readers will most likely be crossing their fingers that the rest of the Finnegan clan will each get their own romances as full of action and suspense as this one.

Once upon a time, Madeline and Daphne were inseparable friends and sisters of the heart. But when a kidnapper tries to take Madeline from her grandmother’s hotel on a remote Pacific Northwest island, it starts a relationship-ending chain of events.

Eighteen years later, in the wake of her grandmother’s death, Madeline is back in Washington’s coastal San Juan Islands to discuss the fate of the long-closed hotel with its caretaker. However, their meeting is derailed upon discovering an elderly man dying at the base of the hotel stairs. It soon becomes apparent that what Madeline thought was an accident is actually murder. Given the secrets she’s carried with her back to the island and her lack of trust in the local police, she calls Jack Rayner. Jack is the no-nonsense owner of the security company Madeline uses for her Arizona hotel, and she could really use Rayner’s professional assistance.

For Jack to fully understand her predicament, Madeline has to reveal to him the mysteries surrounding the man who tried to kidnap her 18 years ago. They agree that it’s too much of a coincidence that, of the four people who knew of the events of that night, two are now dead—one indisputably murdered. Because Daphne also knows about the attempted kidnapping, Madeline tracks her down to assure no harm has come to her. When she discovers that Daphne’s new home has just been burglarized, Jack arranges to have her escorted to the island.

And so begins a twisting ride on a bullet train of romantic suspense. New York Times bestseller Jayne Ann Krentz has crafted an adroit tale of old friends, new loves and edge-of-your-seat suspense. So buckle up and expect to lose sleep, because just when you think you’ve figured it out, Secret Sisters will throw you a new curve.

Without a doubt, Jasinda Wilder’s Madame X, the first book in a new series, is unlike anything else I’ve read. In this compelling and dark novel, one woman will question everything she knows—everything she can remember, at least—as she slowly realizes her savior might not be the hero she imagines him to be.

Madame X can’t remember her life before Caleb. He discovers her bloodied and beaten, takes her to a hospital and oversees her care. After she heals, he employs X and helps her rebuild her identity—keeping her housed, clothed, loved. Caleb is all she knows, and he keeps her locked away like a bird in a cage. And while X wishes for a taste of something more, sometimes the comfort of familiarity is easier to accept than the lure of the new.

Though X is an adult, there are still things she hasn’t experienced, or at least remembers experiencing—first kisses, celebrating birthdays or the taste of wine, to name a few. When her job teaching etiquette to the protégés of the wealthy forces her to step foot outside of her plush apartment, it’s both heartbreaking and beautiful to see the way she adjusts to the outside world. X wants more, especially from Caleb, though it quickly becomes clear that what she’s asking for is something he isn’t capable of giving.

Wilder does a wonderful job of creating something unique with Madame X. The assumed hero isn’t much of a hero at all, despite how much X wishes him to be. However, a knight in shining armor waits in the wings, though Caleb isn’t keen on letting his prized possession go. It’s complicated, and Wilder fully intends to make readers work for X’s happy ending. X is still growing and learning about herself, and she builds strength and confidence as the novel progresses. It’s a delicate metamorphosis that Wilder handles well, writing from X’s insightful and alluring point of view.

Readers will anxiously await the continuation of X’s story. It’s one of those books that you will want your friends to read, just so you have someone with whom to discuss it. X reaches a point where she must decide between the devil she knows or the devil she doesn’t, and her story isn’t one you’ll soon forget.

Without a doubt, Jasinda Wilder’s new series, beginning with Madame X, is unlike anything else I’ve read. In the compelling and dark first novel, one woman will question everything she knows—everything she can remember at least—as she slowly realizes her savior might not be the hero she imagines him to be.

Award-winning author Molly O’Keefe, writing as M. O’Keefe, steps into the world of erotic romance in Everything I Left Unsaid, the first in an edgy, steamy two-book romance between two people whose paths ordinarily wouldn’t intersect.

On the run from an abusive husband, Annie McKay lands in a Carolina trailer park. She’s barely through the door of her temporary digs when she hears a phone ring. Tracking the sound to a cell phone in a drawer, she answers it. And her life is irrevocably changed.

Dylan Daniels has always paid the occupants of Annie’s RV to keep an eye on the man next door. However, he can tell within seconds of talking to her that Annie is nothing like her predecessors. They were willing to spy for the money, but it’s immediately apparent that Annie is both decent and probably too innocent for her own good. Then there’s the unexpected chemistry that turns what should be a straightforward business transaction into a seductive game played over the telephone.

Annie can’t believe the things the deep, dark voice on the other end of the line compels her to do. She feels things and tries things she has never even dreamed of. Yet something about Dylan’s genuine interest, his unthreatening voice, makes her feel safe. She discovers following his commands imbue her with heretofore unknown confidence.

Everything I Left Unsaid follows a dangerous game of secrets and seduction that’s intense and sometimes uncomfortable. But ultimately O’Keefe has deftly penned a story of hope, growth and courage peopled with complex protagonists. It’s a smorgasbord of visceral emotions for the reader, and I for one can hardly wait for November so that I can belly up to that buffet once again and discover the rest of the story in the second book.

Without Restraint is an explosively erotic start to Angela Knight’s Southern Shields series. When a killer out for revenge starts targeting local South Carolina police, deputy Alexis Rogers turns to Navy SEAL and new addition to the department, Frank Murphy, a man with a dominant streak and the only one attuned to Alex’s deepest desires. Crackling with chemistry, Without Restraint is a sensual and suspenseful romance, where passion and possession become two sides of the same coin.

Alex Rogers is still coming to terms with her unconventional (think Fifty Shades of Grey) proclivities in the bedroom. Thankfully, several of her colleagues at the police department are there to help introduce her to a welcoming community of like-minded individuals, guidance she especially needs after leaving her abusive former partner. When Frank, who is new to the area, attends a nightclub that caters to patrons with dark desires, Alex’s friends can’t help but play matchmaker. Unfortunately, their night of exploration and passion makes for an interesting icebreaker when Alex’s new coworker is none other than the man who spurred her into submission.

But when someone close to Alex discovers her preference for a mixture of pain and pleasure, he’ll stop at nothing to expose her deviance to the public. Intermittently, the story is told through the chilling perspective of the individual stalking Alex. As he begins targeting her friends and family and brazenly murdering police, Alex and Frank find comfort in one another as danger mounts.

Knight’s portrayal of an emotionally complex woman trying to reconcile the role of submissive in her sex life with being a strong protector of the community exemplifies the fact that people are multifaceted. With the town being terrorized by an unknown killer and the stakes rising in the erotic games Alex and Frank play, Without Restraint is sure to produce a rush of adrenaline. As the killer grows bolder, Frank and Alex must decide if their intimate relationship is worth defending.

It should be noted, however, that Without Restraint deals with a bevy of difficult topics that are currently at the forefront of the nation’s concerns, including police violence, racism, mental illness, homophobia and violence against women. Although Knight handles some of these topics with sensitivity, she hits some sour notes.

Best-selling author Elizabeth Lowell opens The Perfect Touch with San Francisco art dealer and design studio owner Sara Medina heading to Jackson, Wyoming, in the shadow of the craggy Grand Tetons. Having grown up dirt-poor on a dairy farm, she’d be the first to tell you that cowboy country is the last place she’d choose to be. But she’s travelling to Wyoming to provide expert testimony for Captain Jay Vermilion in a legal battle for disputed ownership of a potentially priceless art collection—and she hopes to handle the collection’s sale should he win. It’s merely business that has her sitting outside the courtroom waiting to hear the final verdict and meet the man with whom she’s shared so many long telephone conversations. It has nothing to do with that deep voice on the other end of the line.

Since coming home, Afghanistan veteran Jay Vermilion has struggled to keep the family ranch afloat. However, given the financial hemorrhaging caused by his former stepmother’s legal wrangling, it hasn’t been easy. Not until the court rules in his favor does he at last have hope of restoring the ranch to its former profitability.

But nothing prepares Jay and Sara for the impact they have on each other. Or the less palatable fact that hot mutual attraction, genuine respect and increasingly deep feelings can’t guarantee a happily ever after. For even though they instantly connect,  Jay and Sara’s differing plans for the future place them worlds apart.

But will the double murder on the ranch that sends them alternately racing to unmask a cold-blooded killer and running for their lives shine a light on what’s truly important in this relationship?

The Perfect Touch serves up a classic romantic suspense with the trademark thrills, chills and passion Elizabeth Lowell’s many readers adore and have come to expect.

With all the force of a revving engine, Kristen Ashley returns to her Chaos series with her third installment, Ride Steady. In this novel filled with plenty of motorcycle mayhem, Carson "Joker" Steele learns whether his high school crush, Cassie, can love the person he’s become or if the former prom queen is still blind to the flame he’s always carried for her.

Joker hasn’t had an easy life. Raised by an abusive father with a mother who left before he could walk, he was a loner in high school—a bad boy. On the opposite end of the spectrum was the untouchable Carissa, with her football-star boyfriend and spot on the cheerleading squad. Years later, however, Carissa is a single mom battling the high school sweetheart and former husband for custody of their son, while Joker has found a surrogate home in the Chaos Motorcycle Club. When Joker pulls over to help a stranded motorist, he recognizes the out-of-luck driver as Carissa the instant he sees her unmistakable curly hair, though Carissa can’t quite put her finger on why the bearded and built biker seems so familiar.

Seeing the lot Carissa was dealt in life, Joker knows that she deserves better. He’ll do anything in his power to help her, even when he knows he should stay away. Though his longing is palpable, he promises himself to simply remain cordial. However, Carissa is determined to get closer to the man who helped fix her car—and so much more.

Both Joker and Carissa struggle to move beyond their damaging pasts. Joker is afraid of telling Carissa who he really is, and it’s hard not to feel his torture. Given Joker’s rough exterior and life, his tender moments with Carissa and her son are made all the sweeter. Life hasn’t turned out as Carissa imagined during her good-girl high school days, and trust doesn’t come easily for her anymore. However, as she slowly opens her heart to Joker, her road to healing proves to be both captivating and emotional.

The brotherhood of the motorcycle club is truly what makes this book uplifting. The way members selflessly rally around each other and those in need is heartwarming, especially as they meddle and play matchmaker between Joker and Carissa. Fans of the Chaos series will also love revisiting characters from previous books.

Ride Steady is a modern-day Cinderella story for not only the heroine, but the hero, as well. Sometimes, the knight in shining armor rides a Harley, not a horse.

Amanda Quick, a pen name of prolific writer Jayne Ann Krentz, takes readers to Victorian-era London in her latest romantic mystery, Garden of Lies. The story follows independent businesswoman Ursula Kern, owner of the Kern Secretarial Agency, who is stunned when one of her employees seemingly takes her own life. Ursula, however, knows the woman too well to believe she would commit suicide. Instead, Ursula is convinced that her friend has been murdered.

Archaeologist and adventurer Slater Roxton is surprised when Ursula tells him she must abruptly resign from her position as his stenographer. He’s even more stunned when she confesses that she plans to investigate what she believes is the murder of her employee. Unable to convince her to abandon the dangerous plan, he announces that he will join her. As an archaeologist, he’s proven skillful at finding lost artifacts, which should easily translate into detective work. Ursula gladly accepts his aid. While she finds Mr. Roxton extremely attractive, she is unaware that his main interest in joining her investigation is to keep her safe.

As Slater and Ursula join forces to unravel the tangled skein of criminal activity that surrounds the truth about her friend’s fate, it quickly becomes apparent that they are now on the mysterious killer’s hit list. They narrowly survive his attacks, and it’s anyone’s guess whether they will unmask the villain before he terminates them both.

Garden of Lies is simply delightful in so many ways. The details of the story’s setting in Victorian London are impeccable, and the hero and heroine are honorable, daring and sharply intelligent. The secondary characters aren’t just flimsy foils, either; they add charm and humor to the tale, and the mystery plot is cleverly detailed, forming a most satisfactory labyrinth of clues. And to top it all off, the dialogue between Slater and Ursula is witty and their romance eminently rewarding. Readers of historical romance and mystery are going to love this latest book from Quick.

Jennifer L. Armentrout returns to her popular Wait for You series with a suspenseful and sexy New Adult romance about taking second chances and learning to heal.

Bartender and burgeoning artist Roxy has loved Reece for years. She was there for him when they grew up, when he came back from serving in the Marines and after a particularly harrowing event while he was on duty as a police officer. But the implications of a one-night stand together put an awkward strain on their once strong friendship. With the tension increasing between them as the elephant in the room goes ignored, a painful reminder from Roxy’s past returns, and a killer begins terrorizing women in the area.

The way Reece and Roxy dance around each other will have readers biting their nails in anticipation.

Both Roxy and Reece have their own demons to address, and it’s a great juxtaposition to see how they handle various situations with their very different attitudes. Reece is protective, honest and oh-so-earnest in everything he does. Meanwhile, Roxy is the definition of quirky and fun, and it’s hard not to smile every time she’s talking.

However, Roxy’s carefree demeanor hides a deep loss. Her best friend was the victim of a hate crime that left him in the care of a facility, unable to speak or do anything on his own. Henry, the man responsible, has just been released from prison, bringing Officer Reece back into Roxy’s life after nearly a year of avoiding one another. Add in a man targeting and attacking women in town, and discussing the repercussions of their night together isn’t a priority for Reece and Roxy, despite the fact that their attraction is becoming increasingly hard to ignore.

Though Fall with Me is the fourth book in the Wait for You series, Armentrout does a flawless job of introducing previous characters and setting the scene without that pesky feeling of being left out. The way Reece and Roxy dance around each other—flirting and toeing that line of no-going-back—will have readers biting their nails in anticipation as both characters strive to peel back each other's layers of guilt and grief. Whether readers are new to Armentrout or longtime fans, this passionate, heartfelt romance is sure to satisfy .
