Claudia Gray’s The Murder of Mr. Wickham is a cozy locked-room mystery set in a world populated by Jane Austen’s beloved characters.

Emma and George Knightley have decided to host a monthlong house party at their estate, Donwell Abbey, and have invited some of their closest friends: the Darcys (including their son, Jonathan), the Brandons, the Wentworths, the Bertrams and Juliet Tilney, the daughter of Northanger Abbey’s Catherine and Henry. During the first days of the party, the very-much-not-invited George Wickham makes an appearance to collect a debt from Mr. Knightley, and we quickly learn that every person in attendance has a grievance with Wickham. Austen fans will already know from Pride and Prejudice that the Darcys’ interactions with Wickham were the opposite of pleasant, and he is still up to his nefarious ways in Gray’s novel: An investment scheme has robbed some couples of their wealth, he is blackmailing Fanny Bertram, and Colonel Brandon has a particularly heartbreaking past with the scoundrel.

When Wickham is found dead one stormy night, it is apparent that someone staying or working at Donwell must have committed the crime, as the muddy roads were too impassable for a stranger to arrive. After witnessing the local magistrate’s bumbling efforts, Juliet and Jonathan form an unlikely partnership, as both are determined to solve the crime.

The Murder of Mr. Wickham is not a novel for Austen purists. The reader must accept the conceit that the characters are all acquainted (in a foreward, the author explains how she tweaked the timeline) and, furthermore, that one of the beloved characters may be a murderer. On the way to reaching the mystery’s satisfying solution, readers also get to see that all the couples still have struggles within their marriages. Those who believe Austen’s novels ended with a firm happily ever after may be dismayed by this development, while others will be fascinated by how Gray complicates the relationships between the various characters.

Readers looking for a charming mystery will adore this book. Gray captures Austen’s tone perfectly, allowing fans to step back into the Regency author’s beloved world. And despite the presence of iconic characters such as Emma Knightley and Lizzie Darcy, the newly invented characters of Jonathan and Juliet are dynamic in their own right. They quickly become adept at working together, and there is a hint that romance is on the horizon.

The Murder of Mr. Wickham will allow many Austen fans an opportunity to revisit the characters they treasure, and solve a mystery to boot.

It seems that Major Sir Robert and Lady Lucy Kurland need only drop in on a new city for a death to occur. Thankfully they’ve become so adept at sleuthing they can almost schedule it alongside their travel itinerary. In Death Comes to Bath, the sixth in Catherine Lloyd’s series, Robert has had a medical setback, so the pair, along with Lucy’s sister, travels to “take the waters” in England’s famed Roman baths. After befriending an older gentleman, the pair is dismayed when he drowns, and foul play is apparent. Lloyd balances period history (Robert was injured in the Battle of Waterloo), a tense romantic subplot and some extravagant vacation shopping while respecting the grave nature of the crime. Class divisions—and the way money can help one surmount them—make for a rich suspect pool. It may be cruel to hope Robert and Lucy keep visiting new cities, given what tends to happen, but watching this duo in action is a joy.

Read a page or three of Riot Most Uncouth and you may wonder why you’d want to stick around while young Lord Byron, author Daniel Friedman’s overwrought and outlandish protagonist, makes his eccentric, in-your-face debut. But stay on for a few more pages and you’ll find yourself intrigued and then committed to Friedman’s lavish, over-the-top plot and larger-than-life characters.

As with his award-winning fictional octogenarian Buck Schatz (Don’t Ever Get Old), Friedman’s imagination has run away with him again through volatile Byron, who is busy cutting a swath of drunkenness and sexual debauchery through the halls of Cambridge University in the company of his companion, a bear named the Professor. Byron, who fancies that his detective powers are unrivaled, is sure he can solve the case of a murder most gory that has been committed in Cambridge. He sets himself upon the task while not for a moment changing his dramatic lifestyle. His persistent, drunken intrusions into the crime scene upset the search undertaken by two apparent private investigators, Knifing and Dingle, who operate separately and rate pretty high in the “strange” category themselves.

The case escalates with more graphic murders, and Byron becomes suspect numero uno in some quarters, enduring a wild, punishing arrest attempt in a runaway carriage. But he’s implacable in his own fears that the crimes somehow involve his father, the long-gone and assumed dead Mad Jack, and his tales of vampires, told to Jack when he was a child living in horrific domestic circumstances. Byron is in thrall to these stories of the undead that frighten, repel and attract him in equal measure. It’s easy to get hooked on Byron’s wild imaginings as he reels out his wavering and fantastic but ultimately spot-on deductions.

Friedman has created a rogues’ gallery of bizarre and seamy characters in this bauble of a story that rankles, reeks and ultimately delights. Readers who start out wishing that Byron could be imprisoned for something—anything, really—may end up with an unexpected affection for Friedman’s overblown but endearing creation, hoping that young Byron will return to entangle us again in a mad quest for . . . whom? Perhaps the Cambridge murderer, who may have disappeared, or even some new embodiment of Byron’s father’s eerie fantasies. The poet is confident he’s up to the challenge.
