Monday contest: Downton fever!

It’s no secret that I love “Downton Abbey”—from the Dowager Countess’s zingers, to the servants’ downstairs drama, to the gorgeous set and costumes. So I would be thrilled to be on the receiving end of this week’s contest, in which we’ll give away four books that would appeal to fans of “Downton.”

  • The Chronicles of Downton Abbey will take you behind the scenes of Julian Fellowes’ beloved drama. (Read more.)
  • The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton, set primarily during the London Blitz, is a twisting and turning story of a secrets, love and war. (Read more.)
  • Ashenden by Elizabeth Wilhide traces the history of a grand British home—and the people who live there—from the 18th century to the present. (Read more.)
  • Abdication by Juliet Nicolson is set in 1936 England and involves King Edward VIII’s love affair with Wallis Simpson—though it’s less about the royals themselves than about the lives they touch. (Read more.)

    Right now, I am way into Call the Midwife: A Memoir of Birth, Joy, and Hard Times by Jennifer Worth. The 2nd and 3rd in the series come out next week and in March. It is already a TV series, but I’ve never watched it. I would love to win this set of British reads.

  16. I would say From Doon With Death by Ruth Rendell. It is the first book in the Chief Inspector Wexler series and it introduced me to this wonderful author and British mysteries oh so many years ago!

    I usually look for books set in Britain, but my all time favorite is Tryst by Ellswyth Thane. It’s a very old love story with a ghost that takes place in the Mendip Hills and Wells. My mother gave it to my aunt to read when my aunt was a young teen, and my aunt gave it to me when I was in my early teens. I re-read it at least once a year.

    It’s hard to pick one favorite. Years ago, I read a travel book in which the author visited different parts of England, focusing on the settings of favorite children’s books. That sounded like a wonderful way to travel. I loved the Mary Poppins, Alice (in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass), and Winnie-the-Pooh books as a child.

    Why is Rhode Island excluded? As a Rhode Islander I don’t see any logical reason that of all the states we are not eligible. My excitement at entering your contest and possibly winning four books I have on my to read list, with a small budget and a long library wait list, was soon dashed by the fact I was not eligible. Despite my lack of eligibility and my love of all things Downton and English I shall still state my favorite book set in Britain.
    It is difficult to choose just one but the The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton enveloped me. I have read all her novels but this one is my favorite. Kate’s novels are able to take you into another world as you read them, and you can feel the love with which she wrote this story. I have enjoyed mostly authors of the past in this genre such as Austen, DuMaurier, Waugh etc. so I was truly excited to possibly win these books to add to my library of contemporary authors.

    I’m reaching back to the time when I first discovered how much I loved to read, and would search my book loving Mom’s reading stash. The book, “Now That April’s There” by Daisy Neumann has remained in my memory for over 60 years! The Brits have an engaging way of writing, and I love them all!

    So many “favorites” but all the Harry Potter books, the James Heriot series, and, of course, all the Tolkein books (although technically set in Middle Earth. Where else would Middle Earth be but in the British Isles? Even if New Zealand made for a beautiful setting in the movies.)

    I love Kate Morton’s books. I have read all of them. I would love to win this set of books because I really enjoy Downton Abbey. I have read a series of books with Masie Dobbs as the main character and loved them. I have become very interested in the time in history of World War 1 and World War 2.

I am now retired and read alot, but only can buy with a gift card I have a nook, tablet and computer to read from. The new books sound great. I watch only English program on PBS when they are on, especially on Sat & Sun.

    I love the series Downton Abbey and our library is doing a showing of session 3 and also a talk and High Tea which I will attend.
    I’ve read some Sherlock Holmes but I enjoy more the story line of Downton Abbey and would love reading the The Downton Abbey book
    for the interesting background.

    Wuthering Heights is my favorite! The doomed love story of pride, power and position getting in the way of two people who should have been allowed to love each other. But they loved and hated each other equally. Catherine’s death scene is the only time I have sobbed while reading a book.

    My favorite books are by Anne Perry. They portray not only England in words that give vision to the scenes she is writing about but the character of the people in her books. Her WWI series is the best.

    My favorite book written in England, so far is “Visions of Glory: Winston Spencer Churchill”, first part of a trilogy written by William Manchester. It not only speaks of the era, but tells the beginning of life for Churchill and the influences upon him, and is like reading a real “Downton Abbey”. I am looking forward to parts 2 and 3.
