I just finished the reissue of Phillip Rock’s The Passing Bells, which is a must-read for Downton fans, and I can’t wait to read the next two books. I also love Jacqueline Winspear’s Maisie Dobbs books.

Jane Eyre
I read – To Marry an English Lord by Gail MacColl and Carol MCD. Wallace.. beautiful book

Why is Rhode Island excluded? As a Rhode Islander I don’t see any logical reason that of all the states we are not eligible. My excitement at entering your contest and possibly winning four books I have on my to read list, with a small budget and a long library wait list, was soon dashed by the fact I was not eligible. Despite my lack of eligibility and my love of all things Downton and English I shall still state my favorite book set in Britain.
It is difficult to choose just one but the The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton enveloped me. I have read all her novels but this one is my favorite. Kate’s novels are able to take you into another world as you read them, and you can feel the love with which she wrote this story. I have enjoyed mostly authors of the past in this genre such as Austen, DuMaurier, Waugh etc. so I was truly excited to possibly win these books to add to my library of contemporary authors.
Congratualtions to the winner!!
My favorite book set in Britain? There are so many. I love Jane Austen and the Bronte sisters. Atonement is a favorite, as is Harry Potter. I suppose if I had to choose an absolute favorite, it would be Jane Eyre. Thanks for the contest!

So many “favorites” but all the Harry Potter books, the James Heriot series, and, of course, all the Tolkein books (although technically set in Middle Earth. Where else would Middle Earth be but in the British Isles? Even if New Zealand made for a beautiful setting in the movies.)

I love to read and have read so many book (English), that I can’t say I have a favorite. I am now retired and read alot, but only can buy with a gift card I have a nook, tablet and computer to read from. The new books sound great. I watch only English program on PBS when they are on, especially on Sat & Sun.
Thanks for your consideration. Judith
I love the series Downton Abbey and our library is doing a showing of session 3 and also a talk and High Tea which I will attend.
I’ve read some Sherlock Holmes but I enjoy more the story line of Downton Abbey and would love reading the The Downton Abbey book
for the interesting background.
I absolutely love Downton Abbey and seeing the beautiful architecture, clothing and cars. It helps to understand how we got to where we are now.
The Dark is Rising sequence by Susan Cooper. Loved all 5 books. Kind of Narnia-Hobbit-Half Magic-H.Potter-PL Travers. MAGIC!!!!

Wuthering Heights is my favorite! The doomed love story of pride, power and position getting in the way of two people who should have been allowed to love each other. But they loved and hated each other equally. Catherine’s death scene is the only time I have sobbed while reading a book.
Jane Eyre, Maeve Binchy’s books and the Ken Follett books.
Also like any WWII novels.
Jane Eyre.
Harry Potter, Meave Binchy, and years ago the Jalna series. There must have been at least eight books that were rather like a soap opera, taking you through generations, including aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
My favorite book is Pride and Prejudice. I think it captures England of that time. I once visited Bath to see where Jane Austen lived and it was just as I envisioned it.
My favorite books are by Anne Perry. They portray not only England in words that give vision to the scenes she is writing about but the character of the people in her books. Her WWI series is the best.

My favorite book written in England, so far is “Visions of Glory: Winston Spencer Churchill”, first part of a trilogy written by William Manchester. It not only speaks of the era, but tells the beginning of life for Churchill and the influences upon him, and is like reading a real “Downton Abbey”. I am looking forward to parts 2 and 3.
Very difficult to pick THE favorite. Philippa Gregory and Ken Follett are two great authors!
Agatha Christie’s books and all other British mysteries. I went to England almost 2 years ago and fell in love with the country!
