Monday contest: Top 10 of 2012

Listen up, all you non-contest types, the ones who KNOW you won’t win and never enter anything: Today’s giveaway is so exciting that even some BookPage staffers are dying to have a shot at it (no, that’s not allowed under our contest rules, but still).

The Top 10 books from the BookPage Best of 2012

The winner will receive copies of the Top 10 books of 2012, as selected by the editors of BookPage. That’s right, you could win 10 hardcover first editions of the best books of the year, and the top two books on the list are signed by the authors (Junot Díaz and Cheryl Strayed)! This collection will look great on your bookshelf, but the real treat will come in discovering what’s inside the covers of these amazing books:

1. This Is How You Lose Her by Junot Díaz
2. Wild by Cheryl Strayed
3. Where’d You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
4. May We Be Forgiven by A.M. Homes

All you booklovers, this contest is worth a try, even if you’ve never entered one of our contests before. And your odds of winning are much better than the lottery!

TO ENTER: In the comments, tell us your favorite book from the Top 10 list, or the book you’re most excited about reading if you win.

omg gone girl has got to be one of the better books i have read in a long time so much that i went and read her other books but by far gone girl was her best!

    • Kelli White says:

I drove over 25 miles to another library in order to read “This Is How You Lose Her,” and it was well worth the trip! My local library offers inter-library loans, but libraries are usually hesitant to loan new publications. I would love to win any of these books!

    • Heather says:

Found Gone Girl to be a thrilling read! Would love to crack open more of the top 10! Fingers crossed.

May We Be Forgiven by A.M. Homes

  6. Melanie says:

The only one I’ve read is Round House by Erdrich, and it was wonderful. Several of the others are on my list, so I’d love to win copies of them all. Thanks.

  7. Kristin T. says:

I haven’t read any of these yet, but the one I’m most excited to read is Hilary Mantel’s Bring Up the Bodies.

Contest ends on my birthday…maybe that will bring me some luck!!!

  8. Linda says:

THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS…..seems to explore different perspectives of decisions made…and a certain amount of sympathy and understanding for the steps taken…but at what price? Intriguing!

  9. Sherman says:

Haven’t read “Wild” yet and my wife keeps telling me I’d like it.

  10. Ginger says:

Still on the library wait=list for Junot Diaz – I’d love to skip the line!

  11. Vicki Wilson says:

I’m most excited about reading GONE GIRL!

  12. Phil Meilinger says:

Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel is on my must read list!

  13. wendy swanson says:

I LOVED Gone Girl-so many twists and turns!

  14. Sabrina says:

The round house was my favorite. I didn’t expect much from it, but it was a very good book. I’m most anxious to read, Where’d you go, Bernadette? I’ve heard mixed reviews, so I want to judge for myself if it’s a good read or not.

  15. Julie H. says:

I loved Cheryl Strayed’s Wild. It was my favorite book this year. I would be happy to read any of the others though. I appreciate this list and look forward to the top picks each year. Thank you!

  24. Joseph Pool says:

I would probably choose to read Gone Girl first. I heard it was hard to put down.

  25. Susan says:

    Definitely – Gone Girl.

  26. Traci says:

Anything from Louise Erdrich is a true gift to the world. I’m glad she is part of this collection.

  27. Erin says:

Considering I have four of the top 10 still on my reading wish list; it is a hard choice. I think I am most looking forward to reading “Wild”.

  28. Kim says:

Wild was a great read…really gets you thinking about the paths we take. I would love to read Gone Girl.

  29. Janelle Downey says:

I guess I’d have to say “Wild” since it’s the only one I’ve read from this bunch (I’m a bit slow, I guess). Cheryl Strayed wrote a poignant memoir of a very dark time in her life. I’d love to win all of these books!

  30. LeAnn says:

From this top 10 list, my favorite so far is Gone Girl. I really didn’t like Amy’s voice in the beginning, but then I just started to dig it. Very interesting tale, and the end left me with the same creepiness I feel at the end of watching Psycho. Very well done.

I haven’t read all the top 10, though. I’d be most interested in the Junot Diaz book. I’ve never read a book by him before and I feel like I should.

  31. Tracey McCrea says:

The signed Junot Diaz sounds amazing and would look great on my bookshelf. Everyone tells me I need to read Wild. :)

  32. Deidra says:

This is a new list of books for me. More to add to my never-ending to read list. I’ve heard of Gone Girl and plan on reading that.

  34. Katrina Kotowski says:

The Round House because I love Erdrich!

  35. Janet Nydegger says:

I really liked Wild by Cheyl Strayed. If you like books like “The Glass Castle” or “The Memory Palace” you will like this book. There are several books in your giveaway that I have been wanting to read esp. “Gone Girl”. I have heard so much about it.

  36. Andrew Austin says:

I would really look forward to reading Gone Girl and This is How You Lose Her

Hands down, Where’d You Go, Bernadette. What a fun book!!

I would most look forward to The Light Between Oceans, with The Lifeboat a close second.

    Fingers crossed….

  39. Deborah Raith says:

I really loved Gone Girl. I listened to it on an audiobook and it added so much to hear the parts in male and female voices. It kept you guessing until the end.

  40. AnnA says:

I’d really love to read “Gone Girl.” It was a runaway hit at the library, and although the vast majority of readers loved it, there were several folks who felt it was terrible. I’d like to see for myself how good it is!

  41. They all sound fantastic but I’m most excited to read This is How You Lose Her. Thanks for sponsoring the contest.

  42. Cindy Leibner says:

    Gone girl!

  43. Gina Slusarski says:

The Light between the Oceans sounds like it would be good!

  44. jennifer drake says:

Cannot wait to read Gone Girl, currently on the waiting list at the library but the list is soooo long.

  45. Valery Elias says:

Would love to read May We Be Forgiven. Interesting title. They all look great.

  46. Mary Beth says:

I’ve read and loved Gone Girl and Light Between Oceans. Would love to read all the rest but Bernadette, especially! Thanks!

  47. aimee says:

Really, REALLY want to read “The Round House” by Louise Erdrich, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” by Maria Semple, and “Bringing Up the Bodies” by Hilary Mantel (soon as I read “Wolf Hall” which I just purchased from an independent bookstore ;-) . Have read “Wild,” “The Lifeboat,” “Gone Girl,” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” and highly recommend all four of them. I would love to win the set to share with my two book clubs!

  48. Kelly Kuningas says:

Just read “The Lifeboat” — what a great read! Want to read “Bring Up the Bodies” next — but would love to read all of these books!

  49. Christopher says:

I am working my way through Wolf Hall so I can read Hilary Mantel’s Bringing Up the Bodies. I would be quite thrilled to be able to read her book as a winner of this contest. :-)

  50. How could I pick just ONE I’m most excited about reading! Did yall sneak a peek at my to-read list? Dang. But I guess if I HAD to pick one- “Where’d you go Bernadette” has been on my list the longest!

  51. I really want to read “Gone Girl”. I have heard good things about this book.

  52. I’m SUPER excited to read ‘Bring up the Bodies’ by Hilary Mantel. I heard an interview with her on NHPR last week and am completely fascinated by the topic of her trilogy, as well as how insanely smart she is. I am knocking wood and crossing fingers that I win!!!!! :-)

  53. Seanna says:

May We Be Forgiven by A.M. Homes.

I haven’t read any of these yet, but this is the one I would begin with.

  54. Aurora Martinez says:

I abandoned another book midway through when a copy of This Is How You Lose Her became available for me to read; devoured it in a night and a half. Diaz can’t write anything that I don’t like. I’m now apparently on a “stray” kick: reading Wild (Cheryl Strayed) right after having finished a book that I believe should be on this list: Astray, by Emma Donoghue.

  55. Mel K. says:

I can’t wait to read “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed!

  56. Maureen says:

The Light Between Oceans is a book I have been dying to read….I’m number 47 on the library wait list!

  57. Debra Levinson says:

Hi, ALL these books are on my to-read list! But i guess the one I am most anxious to read is Gone Girl. Everyone I know who has read it loved it, both the casual readers and the obsessive (like me!).

  66. Deborah Worley Holman says:

Gone Girl is at the top of my wish list.

  67. Claudia Hopkins says:

The Round House has been on my to-read list since it has come out. I would really like to read all these books. Since I broke my wrist and can’t do much, I’ve got the time to read them all!

  68. Deb Files says:

I haven’t had the opportunity to read any of these books yet…my book budget is best spent on used books (more for the money!) so I’m usually behind on the newest ones. I have had The Light Between the Oceans on my to read list for a bit now and am very much looking forward to it.

  69. Tee says:

Have read one on the list, all the rest are “high priority” on my “To Read” list. The one I read, Gone Girl, shot to the top of my all-time favorites. Besides being unputdownable, it spoke some difficult, but profound truths about marriage’s lost opportunities and pitfalls. Thanks so much for this opportunity.

  85. Daniel Sevitt says:

I am most excited to read the Louise Erdrich book as the reviews have been deliciously tempting. The only one on the list that I have already read is Gone Girl which I found silly and even a little unpleasant.
I’m keen to see what Junot Diaz did after Oscar Wao and I guess I’m looking forward to Ms Mantel’s prize-winning sequel. Wolf Hall wasn’t the easiest read, but it was a rewarding one. I may have skipped Bring Up The Bodies if it hadn’t gone and won the Booker, but it’s kind of unmissable now.

As a Minnesotan who frequents author-owned bookstore, Birchbark Books, I am most excited to read Louise Erdrich’s Round House which won a National Book Award. How fun it is to have two books with Minnesota connections on the list!

  165. Lilian says:

The Round House by Louise Erdrich.

As an avid library user, I have read most of the books. “A light between Oceans” was the most thought provoking. I have not cried at the end of a book in a long time, this one did me in.

  208. LyndaT says:

I *loved* Wild, and I’m really excited to read Where’d You Go, Bernadette. And I know the decision is totally random, but I really want to win to cheer me up. We were going to visit my inlaws for Christmas this year, and just got the word that my vacation time request has been turned down because so many other people asked for the 26th & 27th off, too. (And I bet they gave it to people who ALWAYS take those days off, when I haven’t requested time off at Christmas in YEARS.)

    /rant over.

  211. Rene Singley says:

“Gone Girl” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” would compete for the top of my reading list. Guess I’d have to flip a coin.

  212. Christine says:

Read Wild and it was very good. Looking forward to reading The Space Between Oceans and The Lifeboat.

  213. Anna says:

If I won this contest, my friends would say, “you go girl!” I’d take all 10 of these great new books and be a gone girl, nestled away in some comfortable life boat (pondering the light between the oceans) or round house (praying we may be forgiven), and wondering if Cheryl really strayed or merely took a long halftime walk. Hopefully all would be calmly rocking in the boat—not a place where they bring up the bodies—and although my name is Anna, not Bernadette, I would be gone so long that people would ask, “where’d you go Bernadette?” and then they’d understand that, by gifting her 10 good books—that would be (at least for a while) how you lose her—and how to make her happy!

  214. Alicia says:

I cannot wait to read Gone Girl!

  215. Lynne Clark says:

I have not heard of a few of those titles O_o (tho if they’re on your top-ten, I do need to check them out), but of the ones I have heard of, I’m most looking forward to Gone Girl, Bring Up the Bodies and Lifeboat.

Billy Lynn’s Long Half-Time Walk was my favourite book of the year. The blurbs can’t do it justice, which is why I think it’s been such a low-key book.

  221. Nannette says:

Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel is my favorite on the list. I enjoy history. The perspective of Thomas Cromwell was very interesting. I had not read any other books that were from his perspective.

  222. Jane says:

As a wanna-be long distance hiker I was immediately drawn to Wild by Cheryl Strand. I was with HER as she realized her pack was way to big for her but she tried it anyway; when she ended the first day, first week, first month, and when she met up with the “bad boys.” I loved her honesty, her openness about her feelings, and her willingness to go with the flow. It’s MY best book of the year!!!

  223. Lisa Gerol says:

I have been dying to read Wild since it came out–and to get my hands on my own copy of Gone Girl after borrowing it from a friend.

  226. Megan Schrimpf says:

I haven’t read any of these top ten books yet, but I’m most looking toward to reading Gone Girl. Love a good mystery to keep me up late at night reading!

  227. From my blog: I read a lot of books. I don’t necessarily read more than other people who also read a lot of books, and I don’t mention this to aggrandise myself as some holier-than-thou intellectual, I’m just saying. As a child for example, whenever I was scared or nervous, on my first day of primary school for example, or the first time I bunked off a class, it was hiding in the library or in the bushes with a book that got me through it. I would read difficult books to show off how good I was at reading, I read under the table in primary school, I was reading under the table at secondary school and I was still reading under the bar when I worked as a barman as a 21 year old. When I was travelling in India I ended up throwing half of my clothes and my sleeping bag away so I could fit more books into my rucksack. I also finished a B.A. in English Literature last year, and recently started travelling on trains quite a lot.

My point is that in all this highly intensive bookery, particularly the last few years where I’ve had to read quickly, critically and constantly, it’s easy to take literature for granted and forget how it used to feel; when you couldn’t put a book down, when a great book would just have a vice-like grip on your head that you didn’t even bother to think about, you just yielded to it and forgot whatever else you were supposed to be doing. The Red Dwarf novels did it to me when I was 12, Ian McEwan’s Enduring Love did it to me when I was 15, Donna Tartt’s The Secret History did it to me when I was 17 and Alex Garland’s The Beach did it when I was 19, there haven’t been too many since then.

I read Junot Díaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao a few weeks ago and reviewed it well, it was a powerful and distinctive work. Now though, I am glad that I read that book chiefly because it laid the groundwork for This is How You Lose Her, a sixteen-year-gestated collection of stories, which I loved, unequivocally, inexplicably, and with the kind of hypnotised fervour that I wasn’t sure jaded old book-blogging me was still capable of. I raved to my girlfriend about it, I whizzed thoughtlessly through three hour train journey’s. I read it on my Kindle, standing up in a very hot bath until the moment when I absolutely had to put it down in order to soap myself.

I look upon all those books I listed, Enduring Love, The Beach, and The Secret History, the older shelf-brothers of this book, as faintly embarrassing, to differing degrees. They had their moment in the sun, they had those times that I, in all my over-eager and capricious enthusiasm, worshipped them. But now I can see how raggedy and faintly contrived they are, and how their characters are sometimes wildly unrealistic and their plots more than a little dubious. And the same sort of thing will almost certainly happen to This is How You Lose Her. I will look back through it and wonder how this seemed the most passionate and alive book I’d read in years, how I read things on a page and felt things in my chest and throat and head the way I feel things when they actually happen to me. Maybe it’s just the time in my life that this book speaks to, maybe I won’t really need it in a few years the way that I needed those other books and I no longer do. I don’t really know, but books like this are why I read at all.

  228. Y says:

From the list, my favorite would have to be “Gone Girl,” which is also the only one I’ve read.

  232. Lexie says:

I just finished Louise Erdrich’s *The Round House* … What most moved me about the story was the fortitude amongst the characters … the reverent waiting they engaged in to allow healing and justice to emerge in their right time … the subtle circularity in the community — everyone had a role to play, even if sometimes seemingly ambiguous. “All justice comes in its time” … The humour was often deadpan, and hilarious … The boys’ adventures, and their solid friendship, reminded me of the four hobbits in *Lord of the Rings* …

  233. Vicky says:

Would love to read them all. Our book Club’s first book for the new year is Gone Girl, can’t wait to read it. Thank you for the opportunity..

  440. “The Round House” was stirring because of Louise Erdrich’s wonderful writing and her plot which focuses on the injustices done to Native Americans over the years. In this case it is the problem of tribal, federal and state courts to bring a brutal rapist to justice. I loved that it told the story from the viewpoint of the boy whose mother was the victim. A great book!

  441. Laura Davis says:

    The Light Between Oceans

A baby washes ashore in a dinghy on the coast of a lighthouse island in southwestern Australia. The ramifications of this singular event are exceptionally told in this heart wrenching debut novel. The writing style to be poetic at times, thoughtful at all times. I found each and every character to be sympathetic and found myself siding with each and every one at different points during the story. During the last third of the book, the novel was a page turner as I was anxious to see how things would be resolved, and the author managed to include a few more twists when I thought there surely couldn’t be any more. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

(Just hopefully planning ahead.) ;-) The one I am most looking forward to reading from this very desirable lineup is The Light Between Oceans, which has been on my reading wish list for the past couple months. Oh, how I love the excitement of Book Page contests!!!

  681. Barbara Freier says:

The Light Between Oceans….definitely the best book I have read in a long time. Couldn’t put it down. Loved the description of living on a deserted island and the workings of a lighthouse. The deception and love between the couple and the child…very well written. I felt like I was on the island with them. The ending suprised me. I thought Isabel would eventually meet her grown daughter, but then it seemed right that she didn’t because of her extreme dependency on that relationship. I was surprised she was able to stay with her husband after she lost the daughter. A sequel would be wonderful, giving information about the daughter’s life with her biological mother and what happened to the lighthouse after Tom left it. Loved the writing, loved this book.

  682. Kay Johnson says:

Gone Girl is the one I’m waiting for. I have had it on order at the library for some time but there must be a lot of other folks anxious to read it too.

  708. Janell says:

I’m anxious to read “Gone Girl” — am on the wait list for library copy. Love to read, but in a small home, I generally borrow rather than buy. Just don’t have room for everything I want to read, and unless its an exceptional book, I generally don’t re-read books. Love “Book Page”, gives me lots of inspiration for seeking out new titles.

  709. Margaret Daly says:

I am most excited about reading This is How you Lose Her. I heard a radio interview by the author and was intrigued.

Seriously–I think I need meetings!!

  748. Paul Konkolesky says:

I really enjoyed “Wild.” The prospect of walking the entire Appalachian Trail has appealed to me for a long time but there is just no way I could do it now. GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn. She’s not your every day conventional writer of women characters and that’s what makes her book so intriguing. Along with an ending that we may not thought of, she delivers! I am happy to hear that Reese Witherspoon will play this role. I can see her being the one to execute it wonderfully.
I believe Gillian Flynn was here in Arizona when she got that call that her book went to the Best Seller List.

I suffered during Lifeboat and empathized with first the husband, then the wife, then no one during Gone Girl. I’m ready to take on Wild. Sure hope to get the chance.

  810. Amanda says:

I loved Bernadette and her snark! I’d be most excited to read This is How You Lose Her!! Thanks for the contest! I love reading Book Pages!

  811. Liz A-O says:

I’m really torn between Gone Girl and Bing Up the Bodies. Both have been so well-reviewed this year (both by the pros and by my friends!), and they’re both at the top of my “to read” list. (Actually, both are sitting on my Kindle and waiting for me to finish my current books so I can get started.

  812. StriperQueen says:

Would LOVE to read all of the books!!! There’s a reason that they are on the top 10. Can’t wait, hope I win… and of course I am one of those mentioned that never do.

  813. Kelly D. says:

I’ve had This is How You Lose Her on hold at my library for what seems like forever. I’d love to own a copy of any of these books, though.

  814. Debra Bream says:

Although I’d love to read all the books, the first one I’d delve into would be Gone Girl!

  815. Jennifer Miller says:

It’s a toss up between Gone Girl and Where’d You Go, Bernadette for the two books I am most looking forward to reading.

  816. Fred Moore says:

I would be pretty gone if I didn’t win a chance to read “Gone Girl”!

  817. Beth Delaney says:

  819. hilary connolly says:

I really would like to read Wild by Cheryl Strayed

  820. Ann Zeigler says:

I am looking forward to Hilary Mantel’s second Cromwell novel, “Bring Up the Bodies,” especially after her recent NPR interview about filling in the gaps in our understanding of well-known historical events.

  821. Kathy Lane says:

I would love to read each and every one of these books. I am an avid reader and am now retired with a lot of time to pursue my passion…reading!

  822. I would be most excited to read “Bring Up the Bodies”. As long as I can remember (and I’m 77 now) , I’ve been fascinated by the Henry VIII and Elizabeth I era. As a young teen, I read every book in the Jacksonville Public Library pertaining to that period in history. The librarians even let me search in the usually forbidden stacks for obscure volumes. My teen obsession evolved into a passion for reading all genre of books, but always reading. It might be time to revisit the interests of my youth.

  823. angela jackson says:

My favorite book on this list was Bringing Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel, and I would love to read the rest on this list.

    The Light Between Oceans.
