Monday contest: Audiobooks for holiday travel

Thanksgiving is next week, and for many Americans that means travel. Whether you’re in the car or on a plane or train (or sitting around the airport) audiobooks can be a lifesaver on any trip. Which is why this week, we’re giving away a set of five books from Simon & Schuster Audio to TWO lucky readers.

The set includes four best-selling novels and one  incredible music memoir:

In One Person by John Irving, read by John Benjamin Hickey. “The title of Irving’s latest novel is a declaration of its ambition. In One Person is an attempt to capture the harrowing personal journey of a single man as he finds his own sexual, emotional and even literary identity . . . in a way that matters to every single person who picks up the novel.” {read more}

The Lawgiver by Herman Wouk, read by Peter Riegert and Zosia Mamet. “Wouk wrings meaning and emotion from the cynicism of the movie industry, and reveals yet again that he is still capable of astounding feats of storytelling.” {read more}

Gold by Chris Cleave, read by Emilia Fox. “Gold is more than a story about childhood cancer, or the incredible extremes required of an Olympic athlete. It’s about what people are willing to sacrifice to succeed.” {read more}

In the Shadow of the Banyan by Vaddy Ratner, read by Greta Lee. “This haunting debut novel is based on the amazing life story of its author, who was five when the Khmer Rouge came to power in the 1970s.” {read more}

Bruce by Peter Ames Carlin, read by Bobby Cannavale. “Roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair as you travel with Peter Ames Carlin down Springsteen’s thunder roads in Bruce, his captivating biography of The Boss.” {read more}

TO ENTER: Tell us about your planned holiday travel and how an audiobook would improve it.

CONTEST DETAILS: Two winners will be chosen by random.org from among entries received by 4 pm CST on Friday, November 16. I just moved from Michigan to Arizona in June with a brand new fiance, 2 chihuahuas and a cat. We have never lived together nor has the dogs lived with the cat. We strapped my car to a uhaul containing our lives. I followed behind in his vehicle and set off on quite a cross country adventure! Nights in the hotel were less than peaceful. Now we are getting married in January in Michigan. I will be flying home in November for a final fitting for my dresses. He will be driving by himself, since we cannot afford two plane tickets for our own wedding…I will be flying home bymyself…. we plan to stay 1 week in MI, then he will drive all the way back to AZ and I will fly, becuase I do not have vacation time built up…So, that is a TON of travel alone for our most important day and the audio books would be a GREAT wedding gift, companion, and entertainment which is desperately needed. Not to mention, I get jipped out of a bridal shower/bachlorette party because we know no one in AZ….so it would really make my day. Plus, I adore audio books like no one’s business!

    A nine hour drive. Two teenaged daughters. A stressed out husband. Possibly an aging puppy. Many things could improve the drive, but I can’t think of anything better than listening to Bruce by Peter Carlin. Half on the way there, half on the way home. It’s the perfect length!

  58. KJG says:

    I am visiting my family in England this Christmas as I haven’t seen them since December 2003. An audiobook would be great to listen to during the flight, and the long layover between the final flight that will take me to my final destination in England.
