Two books, one stockphoto

While looking through the August releases, I came across this unlikely pair of novels, united by a stockphoto: Margaret Dilloway’s The Care and Handling of Roses with Thorns (Putnam) and Yvette Edwards’ A Cupboard Full of Coats (Amistad).

The images have different light treatments, crops and type additions, but this is definitely the same yellow rose and peeling blue barn. I’ve seen similar covers before, but this is the first time I’ve seen the exact same image used on two jackets that are being released in the same month. Which book do you think used the image better?

The book of Roses uses the photo better, but that they both used the same photo seems to cheapen both books.

    Care and Handling . . .

  3. Milagros says:

STRANGE that they would use they same cover sort of. I think the cleaner looking cover will prevail. The book cover on the lright.

  4. Suzanne says:

for me, margaret’s cover works best as it has a classy look by overprinting writing rather than using a white box. Also the title refers to roses-making it relevant.

My copy of A Cupboard Full of Coats does not have a rose on the cover and it was released in 2011 by Oneworld Publications in Oxford England .

  6. Connie Fischer says:

Actually, I prefer the one on the left and I find that it is the cleaner one. There seems to be less peeling paint.

  7. Rachel E. says:

I looked at some online bookstores at “A Cupboard Full of Coats” and they show a different cover. Maybe the publisher realized there was another book coming out that looked too similar and changed it.

  8. Megan says:

Interesting! Can’t believe they didn’t catch this before somehow. I prefer the left, but both look nice. Wonder if the stories are similar?

  9. Lori says:

I prefer the cover on the left, but I think the publisher is doing a disservice to both books to use the same artwork.

  10. Chris Desmottes says:

I think the Care and Handling of Roses cover looks cleaner and crisper – really crazy that they are the identical picture.

    Great catch! Only a bibliophile!
