Carole King, winner of four Grammy Awards and member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, could easily be considered one of the greatest voices of the baby-boomer generation.
Her memoir, A Natural Woman, traces six decades of the singer-songwriter’s life:
“King’s voice, clear and immediate throughout, turns introspective when reflecting on her years as a commuting earth mother, torn between family and career and silently enduring domestic abuse. As much as the simple life appealed to her nurturing side, once the kids were grown the sounds of the city slowly lured King from her rural exile. Chance encounters with Paul and Linda McCartney, John and Yoko Ono and musical soul mate James Taylor over the years all served to remind her that the true solace for any artist lies with the art itself. . . A Natural Woman reminds us why we learned every song by heart.”

Janis Joplin memoir was one of my favs. I am a child of the 60s so the memoirs of most of the musicians of that period are very interesting to me. I could make a list of all that I have read. Carole King will be my next read whether I win or not but it would be a thrill to win her memoir. Very special.

My favorite memoir by a musician is a fairly recent one, Just Kids by Patti Smith. Wonderfully evocative of the downtown scene in the ’60s.
I would absolutely love to read Carole King’s memoirs. I memorized her
Tapestry LP and drove my sister nuts. It got me through all the crazies
of my high school years. I LOVE CAROLE KING!!!
I would really like to read Diana Ross’ own words, I think she is savvy and powerful enough to not fear spittin’ the truth. We’ll never know about Michael or even Jimi; they left too much money and sibling rivalry for us to ever know the truth. Ms. Ross is at an age now where shame or guilt should play no part in her honest appraisal of what she had to conquer and commit to get where she is. Maybe we’ll hear more of the truth about Mr. Gordy? Perhaps her children’s existence hold her back, but that is the survival of the fittest memoir I’d like to read.
I’ve only read one or two musician memoirs. Clapton was good.
I’d be interested in a memoir of Bob Dylan or James Taylor.
I wanted to create you a little word just to say thank you as before for these great principles you’ve discussed on this website. This has been really strangely generous with people like you giving unhampered what a number of us might have sold for an e-book to generate some bucks for their own end, particularly considering that you could have tried it in case you decided. These secrets in addition served like the fantastic way to know that many people have similar passion like my personal own to grasp a great deal more with regards to this problem. I am certain there are some more pleasurable opportunities up front for those who looked over your site.
