Historical fiction from T.C. Boyle coming in September

T.C. Boyle ranks among my very favorite authors, and with an oeuvre including The Women, The Tortilla Curtain and World’s End, I imagine he tops many of your lists as well.

In September 2012, Viking will publish Boyle’s next book, San Miguel. Two stories will unfold on the desolate isle of San Miguel Island off the Southern California coast. In 1888, Marantha Waters moves to the island with her Civil War veteran husband, where they struggle to keep their daughter from returning to the mainland. In 1930, NYC librarian Elise Lester and her WWI veteran husband head to the island and fail to find the peace they’re looking for. Viking promises “sharp moral conundrum in a distinctive setting.”

I’m feeling a little When the Killing’s Done in setting and a little Drop City its use of this setting as a way to peer into the dark recesses of his characters. I’m looking forward to asking the author himself for a little preview when he comes to Nashville to promote the paperback release of When the Killing’s Done!

Will you read San Miguel?
