It’s been a big summer for fans of science fiction and fantasy, what with the publication of George R.R. Martin’s A Dance with Dragons (our reviewer called it “the most-anticipated fantasy release since—well—the fourth book in the Song of Ice and Fire series”); the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2; the publication of Lev Grossman’s The Magician King (aka Harry Potter for grownups)—and I don’t think I can even count how many people have told me in recent weeks that, thanks to the TV show, they’ve become addicted to A Game of Thrones (that’s book one of A Song of Ice and Fire, for those of you who live under a rock).
If you’re on the lookout for another fantasy series to keep you occupied indoors during this unbearable heat wave, I’d like to direct you to the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Book #13 came out about a week ago, and though serious fans probably had July 26 marked on their calendars for weeks, there’s plenty of time for newcomers to catch up on the adventures of Harry Dresden.
The books center on the investigations of PI/wizard Harry Dresden, who lives in Chicago. According to BookPage reviewer Michael Burgin, the series is “the literary equivalent of a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Like that blend of chocolate and peanut butter, the mix of hard-boiled detective fiction with traditional fantasy elements adds up to ‘two great tastes that taste great together.’ ”
In the Dresden Files’ latest installment, Ghost Story, the wizard private eye is, well, a ghost. But that doesn’t prevent him from attempting to solve his own murder mystery . . .
