Monday contest: World travel dreams

An early Fodor's guide

Confession: I spend way too much time planning trips in my head. Sometimes I take them; sometimes I don’t—but hey, it’s been proven that the anticipation of a trip makes you at least as happy as the trip itself.

If you’re interested in armchair travel, our March issue features three outstanding travel memoirs and a list of updated guidebooks from popular series.

True travel aficionados won’t want to miss our interview with Fodor’s publisher Tim Jarrell—we discuss travel publishing’s past, present and future in honor of the company’s 75th anniversary.

If you’re still looking for the perfect take-me-away read, sign up for BookPageXTRA: our next edition, coming out Tuesday, features BookPage editors’ favorite books—fiction and nonfiction alike—for armchair travel.

What’s your dream travel destination, and why? Leave a comment here telling us by Friday, and you’ll be entered in a contest to win a selection of travel memoirs, including the three books reviewed in our roundup: A Moveable Feast, Big in China and Radio Shangri-La.

ETA: Congrats to Catherine, this week’s winner! Contest is now closed.

  1. Chris says:

Love travel books – like Eat Pray Love and others, its a vacation you can take without leaving home, if you can’t afford it or don’t have time to go at the time.

England and Scotland are vivid in my mind even though I’ve never been there. The history, the culture, and the achingly beautiful countryside make me a true anglophile, and I prefer English novels to all others.

  5. Whitney says:

I am no longer allowed to travel so all my traveling is done through books. I can go further, change destinations with a flip of a page, stop in midflight to prepare meals or play with my dog–all in all not the same but still I get to dream.

  6. kathy says:

Istanbul and all of Turkey. So much history as cultures collide, so many antiquities, been planning this trip in my head for years. Hope to go soon

  7. Randi says:

I love to read carol Field’s Italian baking books. She has us sitting right there in a tratoria sampling all the specialities and then sniffing around bakeries up and down Italy! It is a wonderful way to travel.

  8. Patty Janssen says:

Love reading about Antartica & it’s dangers especially when I’m sitting all warm & cozy by the fire with my book, black lab, hubby & a bottle of red wine!

  9. Would love to go to Denmark. My Greatgrandparents came from there. The only way I will get there is by books.

  10. My best guy friend spent the summer after his freshman year in college in Edinburgh, Scotland. It’s been No. 1 on my list of places to visit since I saw his pictures after his return. Of course, my list extends far beyond that–I’ve only been outside the states once, and that was on a cruise to Cozumel. (I quickly learned that I’m not a cruise person!)

  11. Cam says:

Actually, my sister, brother and I along with our spouses are going to our grandparents’ homeland in the Azores (Portugal) this summer. We are so looking forward to going!

I, too, plan travel in my mind and do try to make as many little trips as money allows. I think that too many Americans don’t have a true appreciation of other countries and their histories simply because they don’t really have a desire to go there. thanks for sharing!

  45. pearl says:

Italy is my choice for the history, romance, culture and wonderful food. Travel is an experience and reading about it is great.

  46. jspecht says:

My dream destination is and always be Paris. I was educated by French Canadian nuns who taught us French and the love of all things French from the first grade. From my teenage years (when I wore the covers off of Maeve Binchy novels like “Circle of Friends” and “Echoes” to today’s favorites like Roddy Doyle’s “A Star Called Henry,” I think I could confidently make my way from Trinity College all the way out to Dun Laoghaire (and back again).

  56. Kathy Kehrli says:

Switzerland! I got a little tease of it last year when I visited Lucerne and I cannot wait to go back. My great-grandparents emigrated from there so I think it’s in my blood. This time, I want to see the whole country, including the small town my ancestors lived in: Innert Kirchen.

Then I’d go to Italy to throw some coins into the Trevi Fountain. This may sounds strange, but I’ve always wanted to visit the penguins in Antarctica. Poor things, I wonder if they ever get cold! I don’t want to be a sightseer, I want to be a part of the place itself!

  126. I would love to travel back to Scotland. I went there several years ago but was only able to see Edinburgh and Inverness. I would love to see even more of the countryside the Isle of Skye. Reading Diana Gabaldon’s

Hokkaido and Okinawa Japan – I’ve seen Japan from Tokyo to Hiroshima, but haven’t experienced Hokkaido or Okinawa. Laura Joh Rowland’s mystery series about Sano Ichiro was an excellent introduction to the places and history of Japan – very helpful in understanding the influence of the samurai and shogun culture. Still dreaming about the breakfasts at Ryokan Asakusa we savored, and the train ride along the Hida River….

Deep down inside I know that this might be the place where I am meant to spend the rest of my life, but I have still never gotten there.
