I’ve been on the hunt for info about the upcoming movie version of We Need to Talk About Kevin for almost a year now, but there hasn’t been much news since filming started in April. That changed today, when a brief interview with John C. Reilly, who plays Franklin, was posted by The Playlist.
“This guy I play tries to be an optimist for almost the whole story, and it’s just one of the saddest things I’ve ever done when the moment comes where he realizes that he can’t affect the kid the way he really wants to,” says Reilly, who also describes his inability to stop tearing up after filming the movie’s climactic scene. Though Lionel Shriver has publicly worried that the adaption wouldn’t take the same structure as the book, another quote from Reilly seems to indicate that it will, which makes this reader very happy.
IMDB lists a September release date in the UK, but nothing for the US yet…here’s hoping that’s the next bit of news to emerge! Well, that or some pictures of Tilda Swinton as Eva, brilliant casting if ever there was.
Are you a fan of the book? Or of Shriver’s other work? We’ll be discussing her latest release, So Much for That, in our next BookPage podcast.
