Oprah has selected a new book for her club and will share this pick with readers on September 18. All we know now is that it will be a Little, Brown trade paperback priced at $14.99. Given their extensive backlist and Oprah’s esoteric taste, this could mean anything at all. What book gets your vote?
UPDATE: The always-stellar Publisher’s Lunch has narrowed it down to the following selections based on the Amazon.com listing, which says the book was priced at $23.99 in hardcover:
Amigoland by Oscar Casares (August 10)
Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness by Lyanda Lynn Haupt (July 27)
This Wicked World by Richard Lange (June 30)
Do Over! by Robin Hemley (May 11)
The Man’s Book: The Essential Guide for the Modern Man by Thomas Fink (May 6)
Secrets to Happiness by Sarah Dunn (March 25)
Eat, Drink and Be From Mississippi by Nanci Kincaid (January 6)
The Book of Calamities: Five Questions About Suffering and Its Meaning by Peter Trachtenberg (August 27, 2008)
The Bible Salesman by Clyde Edgerton (August 11, 2008)
Undiscovered Country by Lin Enger (July 3, 2008)
Say You’re One of Them by Uwem Akpan (June 9, 2008, with trade pb published at $14.99 on July 15, 2009)

I just finished The Help and did not want it to end. It was excellent with deep character development, dialogue that ran in my head as if the words jumped off the page, and a sense (and a reminder) of what the 60s were like. I look forward to whatever this author can write.

I think I’m the only person on the planet that has NEVER read an Oprah book (and I read a lot of books)! Maybe #63 will be the charm.
LOL, I think you might be, Melissa. Not even ANNA KARENINA?
Nope, not even Anna Karenina!
But, I remembered I did read The Poisonwood Bible, but BEFORE she picked it for her book club choice.
My vote is for The Well and the Mine which is is put out by Hawthorne but I believe that’s a division of Little Brown.
I’m not familiar with all the books on The Publisher’s Lunch list but from the ones I’m familiar with, I think it might be “Say You’re One of Them”.
I just heard about “The Help”, Meryl, from one of the attorneys at the firm where I work and will be picking that one up soon. Sounds good!
Marjorie, SAY YOU’RE ONE seems to be the top contender at the moment. I guess we’ll all find out on Sept. 18. Oh, and THE HELP is definitely worth reading.
I’ve also seen rumours that the new pick might be a book by Kathy Griffin. interesting…
Btw, I also just posted about good ol’Oprah and her book club on my blog, and added a poll – I’m curious to know how influential people think she is on their personal reading habits. Please have a look and vote: http://infloox.wordpress.com/
I believe of this list the only one possible is “Say You’re One of Them”. The book to be announced is available in paper and cloth. And the price matches both the cloth and trade editions. This title is brutal but on the lines of an Oprah pick.
AMIGOLAND should be selected .. GREAT read.. what we all will face in one way or another. Well worth he read and the thoughts it provokes in each of us as we grow older…
Does anyone think the fact that her tweet had “this” in quotes means anything? I’ve read theories that it’s a hint she’s picking the Richard Lange book…
