A Giraffe and a Half
The Giving Tree Anniversary Edition
Where the Sidewalk Ends
|
This past May, we mourned the loss of Shel Silverstein, the man who gave us such wonderful books as The Giving Tree and Where the Sidewalk Ends. Interestingly enough, Silverstein -- a writer, poet, artist, and musician -- had not intended to write for children. At the urging of legendary book editor Ursula Nordstrom, Silverstein wrote his first book, Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back and it was published in 1963. But it was his second book, The Giving Tree, that secured Silverstein's place among other notable children's authors. This year, Where the Sidewalk Ends celebrates its 25th and The Giving Tree and A Giraffe and a Half celebrate their 35th anniversaries. To commemorate this triumph, HarperCollins will issue an anniversary edition of The Giving Tree with a special slipcover next month. Like the tree in his most famous book, Silverstein gave us his most precious fruit. He will be greatly missed.
