Meet the Kids' Author: Arlene Alda
Title of your new book:
Hurry Granny Annie
Describe your book in 50 words or less:
Granny Annie is always in a hurry. She zips past little Ruthie, Joe and Charlie as they play. When they ask where she's going, she answers with a riddle: "Have to hurry, can't be late, catching something, something great." What is she catching? That's what the reader finds out.
What has been the biggest influence on your writing?
Watching, listening and playing with real kids.
What was your favorite subject in school? Why?
I loved music. I studied clarinet and I was very good at it.
Who was your childhood hero?
The President of the U.S. during a lot of my childhood was Franklin D. Roosevelt. My family loved him -- and so did I.
What books did you read as a child?
Biographies and autobiographies. I wanted to know what real people did and who they really were.
Do you write other types of books? If so, what kinds?
I write mainly for young children, but two of my books have no text. They only have photographs. (I'm a photographer as well as a writer.)
If you could trade places with one extremely famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
Fame can be a nuisance! I know what it is, because I have a famous husband (Alan Alda from M*A*S*H). I like the quiet, private part of my life more than anything. I'm very happy. I wouldn't trade places with anyone!
What message would you like to send to all children?
Learn to laugh, have good friends, and learn to get satisfaction from hard work and accomplishment.
Arlene Alda has written eight children's books and has been a photographer for 30 years. She gets a lot of inspiration from playing and talking with her grandchildren.
