Review by Louann Jones
If 1998 brings us more children's books as beautiful as "January Rides the Wind," you'll be ecstatic with every trip to the bookstore and library. In her first book for children, poet and editor Charlotte Otten has created short freeform verses that capture specific events in nature for each month of the year. Her word images are clear and detailed, yet brief.
Artist Todd Doney matches these word images in his gorgeous full-page paintings. Deep rich greens give the summer feel to pages for summer months, and blues suggest the feel of winter. Children laughing, fishing, playing, watching, are in most paintings, and suggest the fun of each season.
A large, elegant book, "January Rides the Wind" makes a marvelous introduction to a new year for everyone, not just children.
