Meet the Author

October 1997

Title of your new book:

"The Gospel According to the Son"

Describe your book in 50 words or less:

It's a novel that looks to follow the events of the four gospels. Jesus is indeed the son of God but is also a man not wholly unlike us. I wanted to imagine the mind of such a man, and so the story is told in the first person.

What's your favorite line from your book?

"I think often of the hope that is hidden in the faces of the poor."

What's your favorite book? Movie?

U.S.A. by John Dos Passos
Napolean, the film by Abel Gance

Which writer's work influenced you the least?

"The Critique of Pure Reason" by Immanuel Kant.

About what will your next book be?

It will consist of selections from most of the books I've had published since 1948, and plans are to come out in May, 1998 -- the fiftieth anniversary of "The Naked and the Dead."

Your most aggravating habit?

To waste time

Which one extremely famous person would you like to read your book?

President Clinton -- in the wan hope that it will remind him that we are not necessarily here on earth to aid and abet the rich in further enriching themselves.

If you had a yacht, what would you name it?

The Missing Spinnaker

What one thing would you like to learn to do?

Levitate.
