Review by Marilyn Alspaugh

Choosing board books for little ones can be a problem. What words do they know and understand? What situations are familiar enough for them to comprehend? How complex should pictures be?

A new series meets high standards on all these considerations: "The Bunnykins Book Series" based on Royal Doulton's much-loved Bunnykins line of children's ceramic products. Created more than 60 years ago, the art has become a familiar classic calling to mind children's fairy tales of an earlier day.

Ziccardi Publishing has carefully selected appealing artwork from the Royal Doulton collection and woven simple narratives to create easily understood board books. All four titles emphasize important themes to the two-year-old -- helping and sharing in the family. And like any good family of rabbits with several siblings (Polly, William, Susan and Harry), there're lots of opportunities for learning!

As you read, your little one will probably be identifying with riding the train in "Bunnykins Family Fun Day," getting ready for bed in "Goodnight Bunnykins," baking a cake for daddy in "A Surprise for Daddy Bunnykins" and having a picnic in "Bunnykins Together Forever."

Sturdily bound with full-color illustrations on each page, this new series reminds all of us that basic kindness is learned early in life.

Marilyn Alspaugh has three young "bunnies" of her own in Missoula, Montana.
