And if you've ever doubted that piece of practical wisdom, Barbara Taylor Bradford's latest bestseller, "Power of a Woman", performed here by Janet McTeer, will set you straight. The woman with the power is Stephanie who, at the tender age of 16, married into the prestigious Jardine family, the crown jewelers of London. Now, still stunning at 47, the mother of four grown children, a widow for many long years, Stephanie rules over the highly successful New York branch of this gem of a gem emporium. Yet even in this rarefied world, where everybody is rich, exquisitely coutured, elegantly housed and beautiful, old torments and new troubles can test a woman's mettle. But "never underestimate the power of a woman" (another piece of practical wisdom not to be dismissed), especially when she's starring in a Barbara Bradford biggie.

At first glance Spice Witherspoon's situation seems quite fabulous. She's a glamorous, independent African American woman, owns a chic, popular restaurant, has the resources to more than dabble in real estate ventures and has two grown daughters who are smart and beautiful. But, on a closer look, all is not picture perfect. "One Better," Rosalyn McMillan's second novel, takes us into Spice's life, into the conflicts between mother and daughters, secrets and revelations, dreams and illusions. There's a lot of story here -- enough for a series of soaps -- characters painted with a bold brush and even a moral or two. Lynne Thigpen, who reads, has a rich voice that makes the listening easy and entertaining.
