Eric Carle is masquerading as a 60-something, but readers of kids books know he's only about five years old at heart. It's no wonder he keeps on giving us marvelous books for this age. In his newest fun-filled picture book, "From Head to Toe," he makes a game out of discovering all the ways we can move our bodies. A variety of animals wiggle, clap, wave, bend, stomp and thump, each animal asking a child if he or she can follow suit. "I can do it!" is the happy reply.
Carle has given some thought to selecting which animal will demonstrate which action -- the cat arches its back, the donkey kicks its back legs, the giraffe stretches its neck. In typical Carle fashion, he turns the table at the end with a child asking a bird about the one action that only humans do -- or so they thought.
Carle dedicated this oversize book to Miss Frickey, his first grade teacher in Syracuse, New York. Can't you just see her leading her class "From Head to Toe"? Fortunately for kids, little boy Eric is still at it.
