Love and life and rock and roll

Review by Sukey Howard

Dave Raymond hasn't found himself yet -- he's 31, still lives with his parents in a nondescript New Jersey suburb, still goes with Julie, his high-school sweetheart, and, still, above all else, wants to "make it" as a rock guitarist. "The Wishbones," the title of Tom Perrotta's endearing novel and of the wedding band that Dave plays with, asks the big question -- does marriage mean giving up your dreams and, in this case, your gigs and guitar? Does it mean that you've found yourself? Well, I'm not so sure you'll get the ultimate answer, but I do think that you will have a lot of fun with Dave as he agonizes over love and life and rock and roll during the weeks between inadvertently saying "Let's get married" and actually doing the deed. A sort of late-and-reluctant coming-of-age confessional, it's funny and frank and has a good beat.
