Mystery and mayhem

Review by Sukey Howard

Amos Walker is a general issue private eye, and that's meant as a compliment, not a put-down. He smokes, downs scotch like water, tangles with tough guys and usually wins, deals with dames with husky voices, carries a Luger and is someone you might want on your side should trouble land on your doorstep. In "Never Street," Loren D. Estleman puts Amos through his paces as he tracks down a missing man with a passion for film noir, a frosty wife, a steamy girlfriend, a lowlife brother-in-law, a shifty business partner, and an oblique, but recurring relationship to $92,000 stolen smackeroos. John Kenneth seems to be having as good a time performing as we do listening.

Sukey Howard reports on spoken word audio each month. Don't miss her audio book reviews on CNN's "Sunday Morning."
