Mystery and mayhem

Review by Sukey Howard

Lord Asherton, aka Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley of New Scotland Yard, has at last married Lady Helen and is off on a honeymoon. So his stalwart sidekick, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, gets the starring role in "Deception on His Mind," Elizabeth George's latest addition to her very successful "Lynley" series, and she does quite well on her own. George is up to her usual high standards for plot and fleshed-out characters, but here the subplot is even more compelling -- the taut, edgy relations between the Asian, mostly Pakistani, community and their homegrown neighbors in a small, seaside town in England. As Barbara hunts for the motive behind the murder of a recent Pakistani immigrant, she realizes that the more she uncovers, the less she really understands about this very different culture trying to maintain itself in a newly adopted land. Derek Jacobi has performed many of George's previous novels and is as superbly competent here as always.
