Oprah brought a fine writer to the attention of millions when she chose Ursula Hegi's "Stones from the River" for her TV book club. Now, Hegi has adapted her novel for audio and reads it here. Her soft German accent, equally soft voice and manner give added eloquence to the lyric force of her words.
Set in a small town in Germany, the story begins in the '20s and goes through World War II and its aftermath. Trudi Montag, who narrates, is blue eyed and blonde, but a dwarf whose "otherness" is visible to all in a world where being different means being an outsider, always. This painful perspective gives Trudi insight, courage and a strong sense of morality at a time when so many of her countrymen and neighbors lost their compassion, their very sense of right and wrong.
Sukey Howard reports on spoken word audio each month. Don't miss her audio book reviews on CNN's "Sunday Morning."
