Here's a new and necessary award: Serial Killer-of-the-Month. And this month it goes to "First Cut" by Leah Ruth Robinson. This is the perfect combo of "ER" and "NYPD Blue," the only TV shows I watch with close to serial commitment, so you can understand my partiality.
The "Babydoll Killer," so named for his gruesome M.O., is plying his trade on Manhattan's Upper West Side where Dr. Evelyn Sutcliffe, an ER resident, lives and works. When the murderer attacks a young woman she knows, the abstract horror becomes real; and when a medical student is victimized, Ev is drawn into the hunt for this vicious psychopath herself. The chaos of the ER is nothing compared to the gyrating evidence that points first to one, then another, of her dedicated medical colleagues.
Good New York setting, good suspense, good ER drama, good reading by Margaret Whitton.
Sukey Howard reports on spoken word audio each month. Don't miss her audio book reviews on CNN's "Sunday Morning."
