Bright lights, big facelift

Review by Ann M. Shayne

Why, when Helen Bransford was coming along in Nashville, she was the purtiest thing in three counties. And charm? She could charm the paint off a barn.

What's that glamour girl doing getting a facelift?

So she spent a lot of time in the sun. So her husband (Mr. Jay McInerney) is seven years younger and makes awed comments about Julia Roberts. We at Ye Olde Curiosity Shoppe think Helen shouldn't let some goofy novelist's daydreams get under her skin.

Too late. The intrepid Mrs. McInerney has done the deed. In "Welcome to Your Facelift: What to Expect Before, During and After Cosmetic Surgery" she does for cosmetic surgery what Kathryn Harrison did for unholy alliances: she's gone public in a confessional way.

All the gory bits are here -- she even includes violent-looking photos of herself in various stages of recovery, which will quease out those with vivid imaginations but will prove helpful to those contemplating a nip or tuck.

For youth worshipers who don't fear a couple weeks of weirdness in the name of smooth skin, this is a good book. For the quietly voyeuristic, it's even better.
