Review by Jodi Israel
Susan Krinard fans have eagerly waited for her new release, "Twice a Hero." MacKenzie Sinclair promised her dying grandfather that she would try to end the Sinclair family curse, begun when Mac's great-great-grandfather murdered his partner Liam O'Shea while they were uncovering Mayan ruins in Guatemala. Armed with one half of a Mayan pendant and a flashlight, Mac enters the ancient temple. Just when she thinks she is at a dead end, she discovers a skeleton. Though the body has long since decomposed, a strip of leather around its neck identifies the victim as Liam O'Shea. At the end of the leather is the other half of the pendant. As she holds them both, her world turns inside out and she finds herself facing a live Liam O'Shea in his time. Suddenly she finds herself in a position to put right what once went wrong -- easier said than done.
It is easy to forget this is a time-travel story though Krinard is careful to observe the rules of the subgenre. She also has a good ear for dialogue and dense, descriptive prose. If you're looking for something to sink your teeth into, this is just the book for you.
