Get in There and Cook. No, that's not an order, it's the title of a new cookbook and an invitation to a "Master Class for the Starter Chef" from renowned author, cook and teacher Richard Sax. Sax loves the process of cooking and understands how to translate that love into clear, easy-to-follow instructions and recipes. Each recipe -- from appetizers to desserts -- teaches a cooking technique and is accompanied by a dialogue that answers recipe-specific questions, offers serving suggestions, ideas for recycling leftovers, and general reassuring advice. Though I've spent more than many years cooking and reading cookbooks (an excellent, non-fattening remedy for insomnia), I found much of interest here.
So, we've graduated from Cuisine 101, or been exempted, and we're ready for Carole Peck's advanced seminar on the art of entertaining. It's all in The Buffet Book which serves up "inspired ideas for new style entertaining with 175 recipes." Carole Peck takes a seasonal approach, concentrating on ingredients that are fresh and appealing in menus that balance taste, color, and texture. With Peck's reassuring, practical advice on menu planning, serving, seating, and decorating as well as her wide-ranging, international recipes you can aspire to greater host and hostessing heights and have fun doing it.
