Review by Ann Shayne
They are the toast of New York, a group of 150 very stylish dogs who speak English, walk on two legs, and dress extremely well. They prefer limousines, and they're building an immense castle in lower Manhattan.
What is the story of the monster dogs? How did they get here? Why are they suddenly not feeling so well?
Kirsten Bakis makes an extraordinary literary debut with her novel Lives of the Monster Dogs. Her story of the dog soldiers created by a mad biologist is truly a wonder, a canine Frankenstein tale told with elegance and empathy. She so completely conjures the world of these monster dogs that the reader cannot help but feel for the plight of this not-dog, not-human group.
It is easily one of the year's most curious books. And, curious or not, it is one of the finest.
