Review by Jodi Israel
In Maggie Osborne's The Promise of Jenny Jones, dying Marguarita Sanders offers to take Jenny Jones's place before a firing squad if Jenny will bring six-year-old Graciela to her father in California. Jenny actually thinks twice . . . she hates kids. But she agrees.
Working toward the same goal is Graciela's uncle, Ty Sanders, who is also supposed to bring Graciela to California. The problem is, he's never met Graciela. On his way to find her, he sees Jenny under attack by three men, and he throws himself into the fight. He's immediately attracted to Jenny. Though not conventionally pretty, her spirit makes her beautiful in Ty's eyes. But Jenny doesn't have time for a relationship; she has to get Graciela to California.
Once they give into it, their passion is fiery and sweet and profoundly alters their lives. Osborne has created strong-willed characters who discover they are empowered by love, not shackled by it. A memorable story.
