Review by Jodi Israel
Back in the more traditional romance category is a book after my own heart. Having hit the big three-oh last year I found much to enjoy in Debbie Macomber's new contemporary The Matter of Marriage. Hallie McCarthy turns 30 and realizes that life has passed her by. Sure she has a successful business, but she doesn't have a husband or children. Hallie, a goal-oriented person, decides to make a plan. After all, how hard can it be to find Mr. Right? Hard.
Her first date abandons her on the freeway. Luckily her new next-door neighbor, Steve Marris, is more than willing to loan her cab fare. Date number two isn't much better. When she shells out two thousand dollars for a dating service things get worse. Through it all, Steve's shoulder is there to cry on. It's great to be friends with a woman, Steve thinks, and his kids adore her. But he still loves his ex-wife. Or so it appears.
Macomber clearly had fun with this book. Light but not fluffy, Macomber tells a story to which most of us unmarrieds will easily relate!
