Review by Jodi Israel

Iris Johansen is one of those multi-talented writers. She got her start writing category romances, but her hardcover debut with Ugly Duckling showed her in a whole new light. Long After Midnight has a strong romantic element which makes the book very appealing. Research scientist Kate Denby believes she has just made a major scientific breakthrough. Noah Smith, a fellow research scientist, doesn't just believe it, he knows. More important, he needs her work to complete his miracle drug, RU2. Kate isn't interested in leaving her home, her son, her life to work with Noah until someone blows up her ex-husband.

Noah realizes Kate can't concentrate on finishing her piece of the experiment if her son is in danger, so he invites Seth Drakin, a former Special Forces teammate, to take charge of security. Two men, both attractive to Kate in their own way, make for remarkable tension. Both flawed but still larger than life, the two heroes give Johansen a chance to explore Kate's feelings in more depth than if she had simply fallen for one man. While the science is soft, the hard-driving emotions keep the pace sprinting. Johansen ably demonstrates her writing skills with a fascinating story, but the romance aspect is a side plot.

Jodi Israel is an avid reader of romance. She can be reached at jodi@tiac.net.
