I've listened to so many police dramas, had such a good audio education on procedures, turf wars, and attitudes of big city police departments, that I was getting blasé. Nowhere to Run by Robert Daley made me realize that there was still a lot to learn. But then, Daley is a former Police Commissioner of New York City, and if he doesn't know the nitty-gritty, who does?
Daley also knows the inner workings of the Police Judiciaire in France, and it makes the quotidian nastiness of police life here seem like a piece of cake. The stories of two police detectives parallel each other -- one is Jack Dilger, a tough, strong-willed New York police detective whose controversial exploits get him thrown off the force and into self-exile in southern France, the other is Madeleine LeClerq of the financial section of the Police Judiciaire in Nice whose fearless probing of political corruption leaves her jobless. When Jack and Madeleine meet and their lives intertwine, romance is quickly followed by suspense as both of them are relentlessly pursued by their mortal enemies.
Dick Hill's 14-hour narration never flags.
Sukey Howard reports on spoken word audio each month. Don't miss her audio book reviews on CNN's Sunday Morning.
