Review by Sukey Howard

At the heart of Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood's astonishing new novel, is Grace Marks, an infamous, romantic historical figure who was convicted of murdering her employer and his housekeeper/mistress, but who maintained that she could not remember anything about the crime. And though Atwood immerses you in the "upstairs, downstairs" society of mid-nineteenth century Victorian Canada, her true interest is in the intricate relationships of the characters, the intricacies of the human psyche, and the intricacies of determining guilt and innocence.

The story is told by Grace and by Simon Jones, a young doctor and expert in the young science of mental illness. By giving Grace the soft, lilting accent of her native Ireland, acclaimed actress/reader Elizabeth McGovern creates a vivid, amazingly alive character. She does equally well with the other characters, and the result is an unusually compelling performance of an unusually compelling tale.
