Another story that takes us through middle America is Patricia Potter's The Scotsman Wore Spurs, which continues the story from The Marshall and the Heiress as well as Diablo, both from Bantam.

Andrew Cameron, Earl of Kinloch, came to America to forsake his title and build his own life in Texas. Unfortunately, he can't help involving himself in the lives of others. Overhearing an ambush being planned, he follows the ambushers, eventually foiling their murder attempt of Kirby Kingsley, a wealthy rancher. Kingsley is so grateful to Drew that he invites the younger man to "learn cow" and join him on a cattle drive from San Antonio to Abilene.

Gabrielle Parker knows only that her father died with Kirby Kingsley's name on his lips followed by the word "danger." Convinced that Kirby had her father murdered, she decides to even the score. She dresses up as a boy and manages to get herself hired for the cattle drive.

Unfortunately, Kingsley isn't the blackguard Gabrielle imagines. And Drew is an even bigger problem. Everything about him attracts her, from his voice and his touch to his actions. The feelings are mutual. When Drew discovers she's a woman, not even the close quarters of the cattle drive keep them apart.

This fast-paced, action-filled story doesn't stint on tugging the emotional strings. Drew is hurting from years of emotional neglect and rejection, but it doesn't stop him from reaching out again and again. Gabrielle, now orphaned, lavishes her care on anything that will stand still including horses, calves, babies, and one very special man. Potter makes judicious use of her love scenes, which are flowingly descriptive and very sensual without being graphic. A good book to daydream about!
