Review by Jodi Israel
This month prolific author Nora Roberts sees the publication of her second hardcover. Sanctuary is not strictly a romance. However, romantic themes make for a very satisfying experience.
Off the coast of Savannah is an island, Desire, where secrets and sad pasts haunt its small town of Sanctuary. Sanctuary is the story of the Hathaway family: sisters Jo Ellen and Alexa and brother Brian. Twenty years ago their mother abandoned them without a word or note, a scarring event. Eventually, Jo Ellen left the island to become a noted photographer. After pictures of her mother, dead, are sent to her anonymously, she suffers a mild nervous breakdown and returns to Sanctuary.
Someone else has returned to Sanctuary, also seeking to lay ghosts to rest. Nathan Delaney had been on Desire 20 years ago, had played with Brian, had teased Jo. When he meets Jo again, he senses a kindred spirit, someone who could heal him as completely as he could heal her. But his secret, when revealed, could cost them the greatest love either had ever known. Both Alexa and Brian also find true love in this story, but the focus is Jo and her healing process. This is one of Robertsıs richer novels. Emotionally complex, laden with dynamic characters and highly charged love scenes, this is a story to savor long after you've finished it.
