Finally, the clinch is out of fashion

We knew that romance as a genre had made it to the big leagues once Catherine Coulter and Jayne Ann Krentz released their first hardcovers a few years ago. For many readers this trend is a vindication of the years they spent reading books with bodice-ripping covers that caused them more embarrassment than pride. While the clinch covers are slowly fading in favor of less graphic designs, the wonderful love stories that they protected keep getting better.

Romance Online

If you can't get enough of romance books and want to find others who share your addiction, the place to be is on the email listserv RRA-L. The listserv was started in February 1992 by two Kent State University librarians who saw the incredible popularity of DorothyL, a mystery book lovers list. Believing that romance book readers deserved their own forum, RRA-L was born. The acronym stands for Romance Readers Anonymous because in 1992, many people were embarrassed to be caught reading one of those books.

At last count the list had over 500 members not including those who read the messages as a newsgroup. The many authors on the list include Jo Beverley, Stella Cameron, Eileen Dreyer/Kathleen Korbel and Arnette Lamb, all of whom are vocal and delightful to read. The list is so friendly that various groups periodically meet face to face.
