Review by Alice Cary
Ready for a change of pace? Tumble Bumble isn't strictly a counting book, but rather a cumulative tale in which a tiny bug sets out on a walk and is joined by a host of friends -- a cat, a crocodile, a bee, a baby pig -- until 14 feet are tiptoeing into a little boy's bedroom.
As even more characters join the crowd, ten new friends pile into the boy's bed. Felicia Bond, illustrator of the popular If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and If You Give a Moose a Muffin, knows how to make a straightforward story sparkle with lively creatures who practically tumble bumble off every page. Once they hit the kitchen, there's a veritable doughnut, ice cream, pizza, and pretzel fest; these guys would definitely hit it off with Boynton's berserk hippos.
Alice Cary counts with her son Will and reviews books in Groton, Massachusetts.
