Review by Alice Cary
More Than One is the most sophisticated title of the bunch, posing the question, "Can one be more than 1?" The answer is a resounding yes: one pair is two shoes, one week is seven days, one dozen is twelve, and so on. Miriam Schlein keeps the text simple enough for very young readers, while introducing the playful fun that numbers bring once children start to understand them.
Artist Donald Crews (Freight Train, Truck) has long been a favorite in our house, and here his bright, bold drawings convey a range of scenes, from the beauty of a flock of birds in flight to the enormity of an ocean filled with "skadillions of drops of water."
Each of these books contains exceptional energy and enthusiasm; the result is bound to be a gang of gung-ho, math-friendly readers.
Alice Cary counts with her son Will and reviews books in Groton, Massachusetts.
