I missed Fergie's book tour, missed the talk shows, and didn't listen to the tape of My Story by Sarah the Duchess of York when it first came out. But, intrigued by the glamorous photo of the flaming redheaded duchess on the cover, I yielded to the temptation of hearing dirt about the Royal family and tuned in.
Though Sarah plays the "poor little rich girl" (not very rich she says, though Daddy devoted himself full time to polo and was no stranger at Court) and "country girl" card to the hilt, she did do it her way, against the royal grain, and lives to tell the sordid tale. Welcomed with open arms by the press and the public, as a "breath of fresh air," her spontaneity and candor soon became a liability to the establishment.
In days of old, courtiers used gossip, innuendo, and intrigue to defeat their targets. They still do, according to Fergie, but now they add the power of the tabloid press to their weapons of destruction. The best story, she tells us, is not hers, but how some of the most trusted people at Buckingham Palace have undermined the monarchy itself.
Be that as it may, this is quite a royal soap opera and fun despite itself. The Duchess, who reads, has a lovely voice, whatever one might think of her mouth.
