Review by Sukey Howard

Michael Crichton's latest blockbuster, Airframe, begins as a Norton Aircraft wide body, packed with passengers on a Hong Kong-Denver flight, goes out of control, wildly diving and climbing. Fifty-six passengers are injured and three are dead when the plane finally lands in Los Angeles. Casey Singleton, V.P. for quality control at Norton, is given responsibility for finding out what really happened and for dealing with the media. Needless to say, Casey has her work cut out for her.

The technical trail she follows is surprisingly suspenseful -- even for a non-techie like me. Add a little corporate intrigue and a young, ruthlessly ambitious TV producer who epitomizes the shallow, slapdash approach to "news" which is all too prevalent in our mass media, and you have a novel that meets the Chrichterion for a thriller.

And this is a thriller with a message -- more government regulation of aircraft and airlines is needed -- and a media image that corresponds to reality. Too much to ask after the recent air disasters? Let's hope not.

Expertly read here by Blair Brown.
