It's a cliche that a good business narrative "reads like a novel." Too often, this means that a straightforward business story ends up cast as either Shakespearean tragedy or melodrama. Mercifully, All Corvettes Are Red: The Rebirth of a Legend doesn't read at all like a novel. It's simply a solid piece of reportage, peopled by folks who share an obsession: the Chevrolet Corvette.
Not to say that there isn't drama in this book. Redesigning a car is a massive undertaking, an engineering process that takes years, involves hundreds of people, and costs millions of dollars. When the car is the object of obsessive public adoration, the stakes are even higher.
Freelance writer James Schefter managed to talk his way into General Motors to watch the six-year process of redesigning the Corvette, and he definitely brings back the goods. The best thing about this book is the sense of intense collaboration that must take place, the give and take among people working under great pressure.
The new Corvette just arrived at car dealers last month with hoopla and hype. All Corvettes Are Red takes you behind the scenes to see how the car came to be.
