Stand Up to the IRS, Third Edition
The right attitude and expertise combined will get you far with the IRS, and for three editions now, Frederick W. Daily has been teaching how to do a stand-up job with the tools available to every taxpayer. This book is not just for those in a "situation" with the revenue agency. It will also help you stay out of one by giving you the perspective necessary to file carefully. The author explains when, where, and how you can defend yourself should there be, in spite of your best efforts to avoid it, an audit, tax court, penalty or other kind of problem situation. The third edition of this book, from July 1996, includes all the forms necessary to have penalties and interest removed from a tax bill, negotiate favorable settlements with the IRS, get copies of IRS files on you, request refunds, prepare for and handle audits, challenge tax bills, appeal IRS decisions, represent yourself in tax court, and avoid property seizures.
Unbridled Power: What Every Citizen Should Know about the IRS
This book won't be published until March, but it's worth noting now. Davis is the only person to hold the official post of IRS historian, beginning in 1988 and ending in her resignation in 1995. According to the publisher, upon Davis's resignation, the IRS quickly abolished the position she had held as historian. Among the practices she allegedly exposes:
J.K. Lasser's Face to Face with the IRS: Tactics for Dealing with IRS Problems by Robert G. Nath (Macmillan, $15.95, 0028616065). The author is a practicing attorney who has written and taught widely on tax topics for lawyers, accountants, and the public.
