In the beginning of the book is a sample 1040 form keyed line by line to sections of the book so you can use the book as you fill out your forms. The goodies packaged here include a $19 tax software mail order offer, the standard $2 rebate on the cost of the book, the year-end supplement available in January 1997 (to keep this book competitive with the Ernst & Young), and an exclusive Barron's subscription offer advertised on the front cover. And the way to get the tax guide free is to subscribe to Lasser's Monthly Tax Letter for about $33. That'll keep you reading about taxes all year long, and you'll get a copy of the $14 book, too.
The original scheme for combining step-by-step instruction with reference value, Lasser's has been flattered by considerable imitation. Now they also have the Web site http://www.mcp.com/mgr/lasser which offers current tax legislation, easy online access to hotline topics, and links to other tax-related sites including the IRS. This book also comes in a Professional Edition which includes citations of tax law authorities, audit advice, and a section on how to prepare a federal estate tax return.
