We are still slogging through Shelby Foote's three-volume The Civil War: A Narrative, but it will be a long time before we see Appomattox.
Curious about getting a quick overview, we took a concise side trip into a new, brief history, What They Didn't Teach You About the Civil War.
Author Mike Wright does a fine job of splicing scenes and characters (his background in writing for television is a boon here), and he's mercifully gentle about pruning away all the battle maps, dates, and minutae that get in the way of an amazing chapter in American history.
Highly recommended for Civil War fans who are just getting started in their exploration of the conflict.
