Drums of Autumn

By Diana Gabaldon

How it all begins . . .

"People disappear all the time. Ask any policeman. Better yet, ask a journalist. Disappearances are bread-and-butter to journalists.

Young girls run away from home. Young children stray from their parents and are never seen again. Housewives reach the end of their tether and take the grocery money and a taxi to the station. International financiers change their names and vanish into the smoke of imported cigars.

Many of the lost will be found, eventually, dead or alive. Disappearances, after all, have explanations.

Ususally."

A little time travel on the Internet

Diana Gabaldon has a rich online life, having participated in literary forums on CompuServe for more than nine years. She is kind to her fans, and is happy to correspond about her books.

An admirer at Cal Tech, Rosana Gatti, asked her out of the blue if she could create a Web site for her -- "it was such a generous offer, how could I refuse?" Gabaldon says.

The Diana Gabaldon Home Page has all manner of tidbits for the Outlandish fan: FAQs, newsletters, and for the brave of heart, excerpts from forthcoming books. "Because I write such immense books," she says, "I can put up large chunks without really interfering with the story at all -- I'm not giving away much of the plot."

The Home Page can be found at: http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~gatti/gabaldon/gabaldon.html
