Look it up in the law

Review by Michael Pellecchia

If you think this book is about the time it takes an attorney to earn an hour's billing, you'd be wrong. It simply presents more than 80 common problems, most of which don't require that you consult the 400,000 lawyers working in the U.S. today. Many of these problems can be resolved in small-claims court, if you have prepared with the right documentation, such as receipts and warranties. Sometimes you can bring an out-of-state vendor (such as a company that sells you something by phone) to your state court for redress.

The authors have plenty of similar common sense tips (not legal advice) for consumer concerns which place you as the target of a liability lawsuit, a theft, damage to your property, credit relief, or domestic disputes. Ditto for transactions with mechanics, credit rating firms, contractors, corporations, rip-off artists, and others whom the law allows to toy with you and your sanity up to a point.

No one problem can be addressed satisfactorily in a book such as this. Only the broadest of outlines is possible. This book delivers what it sets out to do: provide a quick reference to most everyday legal situations.
