The tinkerer

Review by Ann Shayne

"Once you reach 30, a man reaches for the solace of power tools," a friend observed, having returned from the Home Depot with a new table saw. He was no woodworker, mind you; but at least now it was possible.

The urge to repair those tools is a related instinct, and the ever-thinking folk of Pleasantville, New York, have updated their bible of self-directed tinkering. The breadth of coverage is surprising, from the expected ("Dealing with clogs" mercifully uses illustrations instead of photographs) to the unusual ("Food processors" will have you dismantling your Cuisinart like a Marine with an M-1 rifle).

Throughout, the illustrations couldn't be clearer, and the troubleshooting charts seem to anticipate every imaginable problem. Furniture repair, plumbing, small and large appliances, home electronics, sports gear, and, yes, yard and workshop tools are covered, and covered well.

If someone you love has inexplicably asked Santa for a Makita rotary sander, go ahead and get it for him, and include this book with it.
