Elusive gifts

Review by Alice Cary

Those weary of holiday gift buying will enjoy Michael Hague's The Perfect Present, in which Jack the Rabbit searches for something to give Ginger, his sweetheart. He decides on a toy kangaroo, but it bounces away, sending Jack on a frenzied, frustrating chase until it ends up at just the right place.

Hague's art has a rich, classical feel, wonderfully showcased by pages that fold out into lengthy panoramas. There's so much to marvel at in Hague's animal kingdom that your own shopping energy may be rejuvenated.

While fans have been enjoying the adventures of Pippi Longstocking for nearly 50 years, Astrid Lindgren hasn't written a new episode in years. Now that's changed with Pippi Longstocking's After-Christmas Party. In this picture book illustrated by Michael Chesworth, the amazing Pippi is just as resourceful and irrepressible as ever. As is traditional in Sweden, she invites all the children in her village to a boisterous "take-down-the-tree" party. Pippi offers just the boost everyone needs once the holidays come to a close: hot chocolate, cream cake, an igloo party room, rooftop sledding, dancing, and endless cheer for the new year.

Alice Cary will celebrate the holidays with her family in Groton, Mass.
