His ingenious white-paper, cutout illustrations are intricate, yet they pop up smoothly. Some have special effects like the seven swans swimming on clear mylar discs with confetti that move to simulate snow. Some suggest Sabuda's child-friendly interpretation of the words: the eight maids resemble a paper doll chain; the nine drummers are mice; the ten pipers are angels. All point to his imagination coupled with exceptional skill in execution.
You will recognize this unusual combination of simple color and intricate design as Sabuda's work if you saw last year's popular Christmas Alphabet. He was a gold medalist at the Dimensional Illustrators Award Show and is the author and illustrator of several other books including last year's award-winning Tutankhamen's Gift.
For the whole family, The 12 Days of Christmas is truly a celebration of the season to treasure from year to year. It may even inspire you to get out paper and scissors.
