Spiritual listening
Review by Sukey Howard
An interesting assortment of audios reflects the more spiritual side of these holidays and offer provocative possibilities for your gift list, or your own wish list. In His Holiness: John Paul II and the Hidden History of Our Time two noted reporters, investigative expert Carl Bernstein and Vatican veteran Marco Politi, dig deep into the life of one of the most influential and fascinating figures of our century and focus on his powerful, behind-the-scenes role in bringing an end to Communism in Eastern Europe. Bernstein and Politi conducted hundreds of interviews with key players in the Washington, Moscow, Warsaw, and the Vatican and used their talents for in-depth research to flesh out this portrait of the man who leads the world's 900 million Roman Catholics. John Hockenberry narrates.
God: A Biography by Jack Miles won the Pulitzer Prize and the highest acclaim from critics for its brilliance, scholarship, and originality. But, I must admit that I was daunted by the prospect of reading it. So, I was pleased to discover that it has been recorded. Sometimes, serious nonfiction seems less fazing when read aloud, and this is serious stuff. Miles illuminates the changing image of God in the books of the Old Testament, not as a historian or theologian, but as a literary critic, beginning with his first appearance in the Hebrew Bible as the Creator, prior to history, to his last as "The Ancient of Days," white-haired and silent, looking forward to the end of history.
